Have you ever watched a movie and wonder just where did the story line come from? Where do the writers of the movies get their ideas from? The inspiration for the film has to come from somewhere.

Well this DVD, Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story explains just where the character of this story comes from. As far back as I can remember I watched the surfing movies with characters such as Kahuna, Moondoggie, Tubesteak and of course there was Gidget. One would have to ask could people like this really exist.

This DVD tells the story behind the world famous book and film franchise that brought the surfing to the masses. In the summer of 1956, Los Angeles teenager, Kathy Kohner discovered Malibu, boys and surfing. She had so much fun in Malibu with sported handles like the Kahuna and Moondoggie that she wrote her thoughts about it in her diary. She then showed it to her father, Frederick Kohner, who was a screenwriter.

The rest is history with the book becoming a best seller and inspiring into a string of movies and TV series that spanned for more than 30 years. The touching look at a unique father/daughter relationship and the connection to so many lives and pop culture stories is as original as it is fun.

These days a lot of young female surfers have been called “Gidget”. The “real” Gidget and how her account of surfing Malibu in the mid-1950’s has spurred a national cultural phenomenon that has never been explored until now.

The DVD has interviews with Kathy Kohner Zuckerman and surf legends like Lance Carson and Terry (Tubesteak) Tracy as well as some of the actors that played Gidget, such as Sally Field, actors with parts in some of the movies, like James Darren, Cliff Robertson and Gregory Harrison, and add to the reality and the myth. Gidget may not have been the first female surfer but she is the one that opened the door for others to follow.
