Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe (Richard Griffiths) divides his time between catching criminals and his true passion – cooking. Crabbe is the proprietor of Pie in the Sky, his dream restaurant. He had hoped to spend his retirement serving up his favorite dishes with his accountant wife, Margaret (Maggie Steed). Unfortunately Crabbe’s boss, Assistant Chief Constable Freddy Fisher (Malcom Sinclair) has different plans. He is determined to keep his best detective on the payroll tackling the cases that only Crabbe’s deft touch can solve.

Episode 1 – Devils on Horseback (Part 1)
A stable boy is found dead. The investigation focuses on Larkhill Stables, run by the ill-tempered Tony Bishop and Bishop’s Cider, run by Tony’s brother Bob.
Episode 2 – Devil’s on Horseback (Part 2)
Another tragedy occurs while the race e is on to find the killer and Margaret finds herself right in the middle of the investigation.
Episode 3 – Chinese Whispers
Local Chinese restaurants fall victims to a series of attacks which seems like a case of racial prejudice, but Crabbe thinks other forces are at play. Pie in the Sky enters a Great British Grub Competition.
Episode 4 – New Leaf
Crabbe has to guard a key witness that is planning to testify against her crime-boss husband. Crabbe makes enemies with the police officer that had been running the case when he takes on the case.
Episode 5 – Breaking Bread
Crabbe is disappointed when a new catering company wins the franchise for the police canteen, but someone else is even unhappier when they start sabotaging its operations to put it out of business.
Episode 6 – Gary’s Cake
Armed robbers raid Pie in the Sky and Crabbe suspects it is an inside job when he investigates. Fisher seeks to head off any potentially embarrassing press coverage while Crabbe does his own personal investigation.
