Phishing is an internet term that refers to the techniques that bad people use to obtain your personal information. The usual reasons for Phishing are financial, or to use your computer without your knowledge to perform something that you would probably not willingly want to be part of. 2007 is rapidly looking like the year of the Phisher. According to some reports 2006 saw a huge rise in the problem.

I get several E-Mails each week informing me that something bad has happened with either my bank or credit card account. I get an equal number warning me that if I don’t click here, my EBay or Pay-Pal account will we suspended.

As the saying goes ‘I fell off the turnip truck, but it was not last night’.

A recent report by MessageLabs finds that 86.2 percent of all email on the Internet is now spam. That sounds like such a high percentage, but I am in agreement. I have several E-Mail accounts, and it can sometimes be quite challenging when you have 400 new messages, and none of them are from people you know!

If I followed all of the advice, I would be: Buffed like a body builder, be a millionaire, live to be 400 years old, add 12 inches to part of my anatomy, and have the staying power of Galapagos Giant Turtle (apparently they can go at it for 12 hours straight)!

I do not take any of these claims at face value; it would be a very cold day in Hell that I would send money to any of these people.

Phishing is a much more insidious type of spam. It is the E-Mail that looks legitimate, from a legitimate company that you already have a relationship with.

Several articles are predicting that the ‘bad guys’ are getting smarter, most E-Mail systems have ‘Spam’ blockers, but this new style of E-Mail makes it past most blocking software.

If you receive an E-Mail from EBay, your bank, your insurance company, even the 7/11 store, do not click on the link. Pick up the phone and call them, oh, and call the number on your statement, not the one in the E-Mail!
