Regional Director’s report: ONGOING SEVERE CHILD S_xual ABUSE at Spirit Lake Rez DESPITE BIA and U.S. Attorney presence and claims to have cleaned it up.ipod touch.

(WARNING: Graphic Wording IS edited below, but NOT edited in the report quoted in attached link.)

While we are aware that similar things are happening on several other reservations, there is documented evidence concerning Spirit Lake which the BIA and U.S. Attorney have – yet nothing is being done. The following is a quote from Thomas Sullivan, Regional Administrator for the ACF, in his 13th report to DC – released at the end of March…

“The Tribal Elder who observed two little boys engaging in ____ ____in her yard did call police immediately. No one in law enforcement took her statement. She tried to tell her story at the February 27, 2013 Hearing but she was shushed by the US Attorney, the BIA leadership and all of those on the platform. The US Attorney did say publicly that he would speak to her privately after the Hearing concluded. He did not. Nor did anyone from his office take her statement. How did these actions protect children?

“One day later, on February 28, 2013, these same two boys were observed by two little girls engaging in ____ ___ on a Spirit Lake school bus. The little girls reported this to the bus driver, their teachers and the school principal. All of these responsible people kept quiet about this incident. None filed a Form 960 as required. How do these actions protect children?

“On March 14, 2013 law enforcement went to the home of these two boys because one of them tried to sexually assault a three year old female neighbor who is developmentally delayed…”

_______________________________________________

Needless to say – the situation remains the same on the Spirit Lake Reservation and children continue to be abused while perpetrators go free. Further, the Regional Director reports that we were lied to by the U.S. attorney on February 27 when those gathered at the Spirit Lake town hall meeting were assured that he was going to speak to the elderly woman who stood up last to tell her story.

She tried very hard to speak at that meeting but wasn’t allowed to. Tragically, because of the neglect of her story, the two children she tried to talk about – who obviously, desperately, need to be taken from that home immediately and given intense counseling, have been observed continuing the same behavior and another child was hurt.

May God be with us – how is it that we as a state and nation allow this to continue?

Those boys need to be removed from their home immediately and receive intensive counseling. The only outcome for these children if we, as a nation, continue to turn our backs is another generation of abusers who have closed their hearts to empathy and compassion.

But they are NOT being removed – despite both tribal and federal government having known about the abuse in that home for many months, if not years.

Mind you – I was there at the Feb. 27th hearing where the elder was shushed. I WITNESSED what Mr. Sullivan is referring to – when they prevented her from speaking – and I commented about it later on our facebook page. I was told by other Spirit Lake members that she wasn’t allowed to tell the story in front of Senate staff because the boys in questions are relatives of a tribal council member.
