If you are a film festival fan, you already know all about Fantastic Fest, it is the annual event that Alamo Drafthouse hosts in Austin Texas. If you are not a movie buff, you may not have heard of the event, the only US film festival that seems to get any main stream media coverage is Sundance. Well all I can say is that it is time that they changed their minds.

This year marks the 7th year of the event, and each year it gets bigger and better. While it may be best well known for its support of Animie, Sci Fi and horror movies, it has grown into having a much broader audience appeal.

2011 saw Fantastic Fest really come of age with the movie Bullhead. The movie won the AMD Next Wave award and went on to become an Oscar Nominee! If you have not seen Bullhead, I strongly urge you to. The world is a small place, so the saying goes. And it was through Bullhead that I became more aware of Fantastic Fest. I happen to know one of the creators of the AMD Next Wave award, Charlie Boswell, AMD’s Director of Digital Media. Charlie was kind enough to open a line of communication with Tim League, the CEO of Alamo Drafthouse, who in turn opened a door to Michael Roskam, the creator of Bullhead.  (A Google search for ‘Bullhead Bloggernews’ will take you on a great journey of discovery)

Fantastic Fest 2012 is shaping up to be the strongest one yet. While I have yet to see anything other than trailers for the movies vying for the coveted AMD Next Wave award, I can say that the 8 movies are all looking very interesting.

More on Fantastic Fest very soon.
