It is that time of year again. When you leave for work it’s dark, and when you return home it’s dark. As the weather gets colder and the snow begins to fall, you feel your throat getting sore and your head starting to hurt. Yes, it is the dreaded flu season.

When you were little I bet your mom said, “Make sure you put a hat on or you’ll catch a cold.” Mom’s advice may not have been entirely accurate. During the winter we spend more time inside. We don’t have the windows open and the air flowing. We are in very close quarters with others, and end up catching germs and colds from each other.

But, there are ways to protect yourself. One major way to help fight off infection is by getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can affect your immune system. If the molecules in your immune system are lowered then you will have a higher susceptibility to illness. While your body is resting, certain immune system molecules rise in the blood. These molecules protect the body from tumors and viruses.

Also, vitamin C works wonders. If you feel a cold coming on, start taking on tablets. Articles say you should take about 1,000 mg twice a day. If you are sick, you can consume more. This vitamin will help boost your body’s ability to fight sickness.

Start taking a daily multivitamin. This will allow you to get the all the nutrients you need in a day. Getting the nutrients you need will keep you healthy.

Make sure you wash your hands before eating, and don’t put your fingers in your mouth or around your face. This way the bacteria from all the places and people you visit are not going to make you sick.

Try to keep your home germ free. Wash your sheets and pillowcases at least once a week to kill any bacteria that may be lurking around. An article I read on ivillage.com says you should replace your pillows every three years. As it collects dander, it becomes a breeding ground for dust mites that can cause allergies.

Even your toothbrush can make you sick. Keep your toothbrush away from toilets because as you flush it blows bacteria right into the air. Then, as you brush you put the bacteria right into your gums and teeth. Also, replace your toothbrush every three months because broken bristles it become a haven for germs.

So, help protect your body from winter sickness by remembering to wash your hands, change your toothbrush, get some rest, and take your daily multivitamin.
