I reviewed this book a little while ago, you can read my review here.

It is time for a confession, many of the books I review are in an electronic format rather than paper. Even when they are on paper they are sometimes in the form of a ‘galley’ or ‘ARC’ (Advanced Reader Copy). Often the cover art is missing, the quality of the printing and paper is somewhat less than ideal, but, it is enough to convey the message.

Today I received my real copy of The Food Revolution Papers and I am tickled pink!

Mannie Barling and his wife Ashley F. Brooks invested countless hours on this project. In a small way I was the co-conspirator, I goaded the pair of them with ‘silly questions’ on the subject of health and nutrition. It is probably a good thing that they live in Southern California and I live in Mississippi because I am sure that there were occasions when they wanted to take out a ‘contract’ on me! This would have been easy, we have a mutual friend Denny Griffin who specializes in working with ex-mobsters.

The Food Revolution Papers is the result of hundreds of phone calls, thousands of emails, and many radio programs on the subject of health and nutrition in our brave new world.

Through the year I got to meet many interesting people and read many, many articles on the subject of Food and Nutrition that gave me pause for thought.

Some were amusing (looking back). One in particular springs to mind. Our guest on the program was Arlene Sidaris, the widow of Andy Sidaris. Andy is probably best known for his pioneering efforts with ABC’s Wide World Of Sports, for 25 years he ran the franchise, Football, Basketball, the Olympics, Andy was the man. After he retired from that mission, he moved into producing movies that were shown on late night cable channels.

Blissfully unaware of this fact I mentioned the name Andy Sidaris to my wife.

Oh yes I remember the movies, they were on late night cable TV. I watched many of them.

I took this as a sign that Jan might be a fan.

I had no idea what the movies were about, so when Arlene Sidaris graciously offered to send me a set of her late husbands efforts I said yes.

A few days later my favorite courier company delivered a brown cardboard box. I gave the box to Jan to open.

Her eyes got wide, and her nostrils flared. “You are not watching these” she exclaimed!

Apparently there had been a miscommunication. I had assumed that by her saying that she had seen the movies, she would like to have copies. That was not the case! It was her ex-husband that liked the movies and she was forced to watch them!

Andy specialized in ‘Boobs, Babes, boobs and Bombs’, oops I got that wrong it was ‘Bullets, Bombs, and Babes’. But I am sure you get the idea.

The upshot was that I was in a pile of trouble!

For the most part though, our guests were slightly more mainstream. We had farmers, doctors, and other concerned individuals.  They all were interesting, and they all had much to offer.

I like to always offer a balanced view. And in that quest I reached out to Big Agri and Big Pharma extending invites. For some reason they declined. I could not understand why. After a three week wait Conagra’s ‘Hunts’ brand got back to me with a very well crafted email on the subject of why they had dropped High Fructose Corn Syrup from the popular line of Ketchup. They made it seem more like an advertising stunt than anything else! Of course they conveniently buried the idea of coming on the radio to face the tough questions.

It was a similar situation with the Corn Refiners Association. If HFCS is so great, and indeed is the same as real sugar, why wouldn’t you want to shout this from the rafters? They have been shouting it through TV ads ‘Sugar is Sugar’. Of course there is one minor difference between a TV ad and coming on the radio. TV is a one way media, a radio interview is a two way flow of information.

The CRA is headed by Audrae Erickson, no, that is not a typo, one can only assume that a) it was a typo by an overtired hospital worker while creating the birth certificate, and b) the name Audrae has now been patented by Monsanto!

The Food Revolution Papers was a great quest. I had no clue where it might lead, but that is the joy in taking the journey. It is not the destination that is important,  it is the stops that you make along the way.

For every Hunts Ketchup and CRA person there were 100 people that I am proud to say that I talked to.  There is a TV ad running for a genealogy site, they use the slogan ‘you don’t have to know what to look for, you just have to start looking’, how right they are!
