Detective Inspector Lejeune and Police Surgeon Edward Kerrigan find the killing a mystery but they don’t put too much thought in the list given to Miss Marple by the victim.

Miss Marple however decides to see if there is a connection and soon finds as she investigates that slowly people listed on this list are dying. She gets a clue that an identical list of names are on a paper headed “The Pale Horse Inn” which leads her to the Inn in Hampshire which is the spooky place of business that the three witches run. Apparently the list seemed to be linked to a secret possibly linking to the anniversary of the burning of a witch.

As Miss Marple continues investigating one of the guests in at the Inn is found dead in his bed and Miss Marple soon learns that her own life could be in danger now.
