General Augusto Pinochet, the former Chilean dictator whose reign included thousands of political killings and torture, is clinging to life in a Chilean hospital, after having a heart attack, and being read his last rites. The 91 year old, who reigned in Chile from 1973-1990, has already undergone angioplasty, and doctors will perform emergency bypass surgery on him, later today.

Due to his deteriorating health over the last few years, he was able to avoid being tried for humanity crimes. “Pinochet is used to becoming ill every time a court ruling is near,” human rights lawyer Hiram Villagra told Radio Bio Bio after the heart attack was reported. “He is hospitalized every time he faces an indictment, that is why we have doubts this time, too.”
