This week saw another two days of Court time taken up dealing with pre-trial motions, primarily aimed at some of the scientific evidence that the prosecution wishes to use. The defense is arguing long (boring) and hard that the science is junk science.
Will Beaz get it all tossed? Root growth, air samples showing chloroform, cadaver dogs, etc?
What was interesting this week was the seeming apathy by the prosecution, Jeff Ashton waived Cross on a couple of occasions. Maybe the scientific evidence is not very important to the prosecutions case?
In football terms, was Jeff Ashton just letting Jose Baez run the clock down?
Science and juries never seem to get along well. Juries get bored with being put back in school to learn new things, they much prefer dealing with concepts that they already understand.
Listening to hours of root growth, air analysis or stains in Casey Anthony’s car, hardly make for riveting court room drama for a sequestered jury.
Do the prosecution need, or really care about this evidence? Sure it is nice to have, but it plays second fiddle to the really compelling evidence.
The 31 days between Caylee Anthony going missing, and the fact being reported. Cindy and George Anthony both claiming that Casey Anthony’s car smelled of death. Casey’s fantasy of working for Universal Studios. Money theft, her party habits in those 31 days. These are worth many more points to a prosecution than spikes on a chromatograph, or the ‘best practices in training a Cadaver dog’.
Also of interest was Judge Perry’s final comments today concerning jury selection. Was this a pre-emptive strike?
I do hope that you can join us on Sunday at 4pm to listen to what the panel has to say. The exact panel is still being finalized, but it seems that Jan and I will be joined by the usual suspects.
You can use this link to listen in live.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackShe was the last one seeing her daughter. And she knows what she did to hear. And she loves getting all this attention. I have no respect for any mother who waits 31 days to report it.
If she loved her daughter like she said she did she would of done something right away.I hope the judge lets the evidence in. Why should she get away with it? When poor caylee never got a chance in life because of her own mother. That all she wanted to do was party and steal She has no respect for our country after wraping herself in a flag
Simon, “running out the clock” is right. And the clock is truly running out on the defense I’m afraid. For every little bit that Baez chooses to fight over, there is a mountain of other evidence that is just as damning, if not more so.
I love this judge, and Baez makes me sick he is grasping at straws! Casey is a LIAR, need I say more she can’t tell the truth. God bless her daughter she was such a cute girl, who could do that to a child deserves what she gets. Shame on her
Cathy.
Thank you for the article, Simon!
I’ll “see” you and Jan on Sunday at 3 p.m. CDT!
why are the ants and nutfense so afraid of the truth? the ants”perfect life” is already in shreds.
This underbelly family of the Big O fool nobody. The other day when Cindy was yammering about her Febreeze and fabric softner sheets flying around the car-in a closed garage. Something dawned on me. If the stench was So Bad and we know it was, why was the car left in the garage all opened up like that with the garage closed for hours? So the noxious odor could co mingle with the decomp that was maybe already prexisting in the garage/house-Probably-JMO. Why did they wait hours before calling the police-let’s nto mention the 31 days yet. Never bought the poor granparents story. They are vile people. JMO.
I think JA declined to cross some experts since they’d already met their burden for the Frye requirements on those topics, didn’t see any points of the defense that they had to counter, & recognized the defense was basically “trying the case” outside Frye guidelines so there was no point in doing a cross examination. Like you wrote Simon in your sports analogy, JA was winding down the clock.
I realize that HHJP was letting Baez hang himself by letting him “go there” after making him (& everyone in listening/viewing range) cognizant of where he legally stood (LOL – yeah buddy! he got himself sommmme great legal ed back in law school! now the Judge has to edumacate him on-the-job)….& it’s to the State’s benefit….but geez oh man! This is what made everyone’s ears bleed! jmho
I think the science in this murder case isn’t going to be all that bad for the jury coz “the worst is over” -Frye should have better defined the scope to be presented at trial. Unfortunately, Baez has a huge love of hearing himself talk, is inarticulate, & can’t form a cogent question to save his own life if he faced the death penalty himself, then doesn’t comprehend the answer once it’s given…not that he didn’t hear it, he just lacks the intelligence to comprehend. Sims can’t seem to stop repeating the same question for 2 hours straight.
I think the any & all of the car trunk evidence (stain evidence, the stench of decomp, the post-mortem banding of the hair) is crucial to connecting the defendant to the murder. The rare duct tape is critical in establishing the method of killing & the heinousness of the killing. The jury will just have to sift through it all.
One correction I have to make: the defendant NEVER called 911 to report her daughter dead or allegedly missing….& would never have, in all likelihood, based on how she initially spoke to the dispatcher when forced. It was the grandmother who made the 911 call (albeit after tampering with the car trunk crime scene, but it wasn’t designated as such at the time) after 31 days had passed into 32. jmho
Sierra, I agree. Casey did not wait 31 days. It took 31 days for Cindy Anthony to realize that her granddaughter was “missing” Cindy Anthony was the one who called the police and reported that Caylee had been kidnapped.
On another subject, the most compelling evidence that there was indeed a dead body in the damn car was Casey’s actions. She left the car in a strip mall parking lot next to a dumpster claiming it ran out of gas? Why didn’t she return for her car? All she had to do was get some gas and go back for her car. She also complained to a friend that she had ran over a squirrel and the car was beginning to smell bad because of it.
How could she drive around with a car that smelled like a dead body had been in the damn car? Wouldn’t her friends have smelled the odor and knew something was wrong? She had to get rid of it.
Also, how many people drive around with bags of garbage in their car? Don’t they pick up garbage at the curb? Or if you live in an apartment complex or dorm, isn’t there a dumpster you can throw you trash into? Why drive around with garbage in your trunk? Could it be she wanted to use the garbage in the trunk as an excuse for the bad odor in the trunk?
