Having been a major contributor the the largest ecological disaster to ever hit the Gulf Region one would think that the operators of the ill fated Deep Water Horizon drilling rig would prefer to keep a low profile. But no! In a filing made April/1 the company disclosed that bonus checks totaling almost $900,000 have been paid to the top five executives. The bonus in part being tied to the companies safety record.

This is akin to saying. Great job, only 11 people died, and we completely ruined the livelihood of every fisherman in the Gulf area, and we killed countless fish, birds, and other critters. Our oil is still washing up on shore, countless jobs have been lost, businesses have closed their doors for the last time. There are long term health hazards for residents in the area. So as a small token of my appreciation for all of your hard work in bringing a region to its knees, here is $900,000 as a token of our appreciation.

What a crock!

If Transocean had an ounce of sense they would have taken that $900,000 and given it to one of the more reputable organizations working hard to sustain the needs of the residents. At this stage the Gulf is not rebuilding, it is merely trying to survive. $900,000 could go a long way to putting food on tables, and clothes on backs.

11 men died in the disaster, Yet five men get rewarded. This is an outrage. One that I do hope comes back to haunt Transocean. It is almost as if on the job ad they say…

Executive wanted, safety bonus guaranteed, a death here, a death there, ecological disaster, we don’t care. For consideration please forward your resume to ireallydontgiveadamn@bigpay.com

The only real hope is that BP, Transocean, and the rest of the transgressors will face some criminal charges.

Personally I would not permit BP or Transocean to drill a hole in my wall to hang a picture! Of course we are heading into another presidential race, and the hunt for political contributions is on. It will be interesting to see where BP and Transocean hang their hats.Simon Barrett
