Students attending the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis are worried about their safety in light of seemingly random, violent assaults in neighborhoods near the campus. One student was attacked by “five or six men” who beat him, then turned on a second student. A student from Bethel University was also assaulted near the University of Minnesota, and assaults have doubled from the same time period compared to the previous year. Some have speculated the assaults are thrill-seeking behavior, since robbery doesn’t appear to be the primary motive.

The assaults are worrisome to the campus community, but media coverage has mostly been by the campus newspaper, the Minnesota Daily, with some periodic television news coverage including video footage literally showing one victim in his hospital bed. Meanwhile, local police continue to concentrate resources on “party patrol” activity, writing hundreds of tickets for minor drinking.
