Chocoholics have finally been matched or overtaken by Soyaholics – people who look for soy in every product and sprinkle it over any products that do not contain any. Women eat soy like it is the Holy Grail of food. It has become America’s favorite “health” food.Nothing could please the soy industry more. Over the past decade, advertisements and newspaper articles have proclaimed soy foods as the answer to all of America’s nutritional problems. The soy industry formed more than 65 associations to lobby state and federal governments to recommend higher consumption of its product – under an ad campaign called, the “joy of soy”.
Now soy can be found in almost every product on your grocery store shelves. You can find it in simple Doritos corn chips, ice cream, caned tuna and every packaged food you can think of under names like yeast extract, soy protein, soybean oil, soy lecithin and soy flour.
It lurks in nearly 90% of the foods sold including infant formulas, McDonald’s hamburgers and almost all frozen foods. Imagine the savings from diluting real hamburger beef with, for example, 10% soy mix?
But, is it a “wonder health food” or is it just another industry hoax to promote the sales of one of its unhealthy genetically modified products?
In 1999, Big Food lobbyists were successful in getting the FDA to approve a health claim for soy protein. The claim states that, “25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.”
The additional campaigning touting the possibility that soy would prevent heart disease, fight cancer, eliminate menopause flashes and build strong bodies was very seductive approach to selling soy.
But the industry ignored the fact that soy is one of the top eight allergens that cause immediate hypersensitivity reactions such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose, hives, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing and anaphylactic shock. Delayed allergic responses are even more common and occur anywhere from several hours to several days after the food is eaten.
Cheap genetically modified soy created an opportunity for biotech companies to develop cheap meat substitutes, to dilute products to achieve greater profits, to formulate soy-based pharmaceuticals, and to develop a renewable resource that could replace petroleum-based plastics and fuels.
But, despite their efforts, this is the same genetically modified Bt soy (Bacillus thuringiensis – an insect-killing bacterium ) that Europe and Japan refuse to permit imported into their countries. The reality of Bt toxin soy is summed up in a study by The Cornucopia Institute, “When GM soy was fed to female rats, most of their babies died within three weeks.”
Big Food does not make much profit from any food that people eat in moderation. The continual push seems to be that if the recommend daily allowance (RDA) of any food is good for you, then ten times the RDA must be better. In America, a little or moderate amount of anything is never enough. More is always better for their pockets.
But the FDA health claim for soy protein recommends that consumers incorporate four servings of at least 6.25 grams of soy protein into their daily diet, for a total of at least 25 grams of soy protein each day. The high consumption of soy in Asian countries is an American myth. The fact is that, in Asia, the RDA of organic soy is limited to a mere 39 grams per day. Japan refuses to allow GMO Bt soy to be sold in its country because of its dangers.
To make matters worse, instructing anyone to eat the same thing everyday is dangerous to your health. The repeating of the same thing day after day will cause delayed food intolerance/allergy. So, even if you start out not having allergic/intolerance illnesses, you will eventually. The soy becomes toxic to the body which can not broken down properly. The toxic element starts a cycle of the body craving the soy. Eventually, this will result in over eating and weight gain. It is very unhealthy.
As we say in our other blogs, the same can be said with the corn products and by products that are now in almost everything, including your medicines. Yes, your Intravenous I.V. have corn and medicines sometimes soy. So much of everything in our daily diet are the same but with different flavor enhances. Repeat eating will result in immune system problems, silent chronic inflammation and future diseases, including sudden heart attack.
Initially, people turned their nose up at the sound of soy. Full Psychological profiling reports were accumulated on how to get people to buy into their program of eating lots of soy. The governmental programs and university’s such as Cornell have plenty of marketing savvy. Like corn and MSG, soy became other names hidden in ingredients to sell the GMO soy products.
The soy industry advertisers claim that by simply eating soy for your protein daily you can prevent a heart attack and lower your cholesterol. The vast multi-million dollar campaign worked. Despite the FDA recommendation of only 25 grams per day, some Americans eat as much as 250 grams or 1 cup or more of soy per meal. Dieters who consume energy, breakfast drinks and tofu meatless meals consume even more.
According to the Whole Soy Story - The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food by Kaayla T. Daniel, “There’s nothing natural about these modern soy protein products. Textured soy protein, for example, is made by forcing defatted soy flour through a machine called an extruder under conditions of such extreme heat and pressure that the very structure of the soy protein is changed. Production differs little from the extrusion technology used to produce starch-based packing materials, fiber-based industrial products, and plastic toy parts, bowls, and plates.”
To make soy more appetizing, the manufacturers added sugar, synthetic sweeteners, genetically modified high fructose corn sugar, refined salt, artificial flavorings, colors and MSG. So the soy isn’t really soy. It is a Frankenfood created for the sole purpose of making a profit from health conscious people trying to live a healthier life.
We know many vegans and vegetarians who consider their meatless diets safe. Many, thinking they are mirroring a healthy custom in Asian countries, eat genetically modified soy in amounts their bodies cannot digest. But Americans on a genetically modified (GMO) Bt soy based diet are in as much danger of heart attacks and cancer as red meat eaters.
That is because the process of making soy protein isolate begins with defatted soybean meal, which is mixed with a caustic alkaline solution to remove the fiber, then washed in an acid solution to precipitate out the protein. The protein curds are then dipped into another alkaline solution. But vitamin, mineral, and protein quality are sacrificed in the process. And levels of carcinogens such as nitrosamines are increased to a dangerous level.
In 1979, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology said that the only safe use for this type of soy was for sealers for cardboard packages.
Literally thousands of studies have linked all forms of soy to many diseases, including malnutrition. Many of these studies have also linked soy to digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility. Now studies are linking soy to even cancer and heart disease.
More than 70 years of human, animal, and laboratory studies show that soybeans put the thyroid at risk. Infants, whose main source of nutrient is soy-based formula, are at the highest risk of illness and disease because of their size and organ developmental.
In 1998, scientists attending the Working Group of biosafety of The UN-Concention on Bilogical Diversity warned the group about soy stating “. . . all governments to use whatever methods available to them to bar from their markets, on grounds of injury to public health, Monsanto’s genetically manipulated (GM) ‘Roundup-Ready” soybeans.
Make no mistake about it, the differences between organic soy and genetically modified soy are dangerous to your health. If you are pregnant or have an infant, then the dangers increases exponentially. If you are going to eat soy, eat organic soy in moderation and never above 25 grams per day. Don’t be fooled by industry claims said for the sole purpose of selling you more soy and increasing their profits.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI’m aware of Internet paranoia on the subject of soy and the contention that only fermented soy is safe to consume. That is simply not true. Some of the best forms of soy - edamame, tofu and soy nuts - are unfermented and are much more likely to help you than hurt you.
Claims that unfermented soy foods (such as tofu and soy milk) contain toxins that block the action of enzymes needed to digest protein, and that these toxins cause pancreatic enlargement, cancer and stunted growth in animals are misleading. While soy does contain substances (trypsin inhibitors) that may adversely affect the pancreas in animals, there’s no solid evidence that they cause similar problems in humans. Furthermore, trypsin inhibitors are found in all of the vegetables of the cabbage family as well as in beans other than soy.
Breast cancer: Here, the idea is that high levels of isoflavones, active ingredients in soy that behave like estrogen in the body, may increase the risk of breast cancer. While high levels of isolated isoflavones may do so, it appears that the total mix of weak plant estrogens in soy protects the body’s estrogen receptors. This protection may reduce the effects of excess estrogen exposure from such external sources as meats and dairy products from hormone-treated cows as well as artificial chemicals and industrial pollutants that act as foreign estrogens. Japanese women whose diets contain a lot of soy foods have only one-fifth the rate of breast cancer that occurs among Western women.
Thyroid Problems: Excess consumption of soy can affect thyroid function, but only if you have a thyroid disorder to begin with or if you’re not getting enough iodine in your diet (a rare deficiency in the United States). If you take medication for hypothyroidism (low thyroid), and are concerned about the effect of eating two daily servings of soy, have your thyroid levels checked regularly.
Mineral absorption: The idea that substances in soy called phytates block absorption of essential minerals is also in circulation, but there is no scientific data suggesting that soy consumption leads to mineral deficiency in humans.
All told, based on the evidence to date, I see no reason to worry about eating soy foods, whether fermented or not. I still recommend consuming one to two servings of soy per day, an amount equivalent to one cup of soy milk, or one half cup of tofu, soy protein (tempeh) or soy nuts.
Andrew Weil, M.D.
We are surprised and flattered that someone of Dr. Weil’s reputation would take the time to comment on our blog.
But Dr. Weil fails to address the dangers of genetically modified foods, the toxins used to split genes and their toxic effect on rats, mice and humans.
The danger in soy lies in the genetic modification of its RNA and DNA and the amount consumed daily. Eating genetically modified soy will not yield the health benefits set out by Dr. Weil. It will only make you sick or sicker.
Until Doctors such as Dr. Weil are willing to take a stance on genetically modified foods, their advice is hollow.
We agree with Dr. Weil that soy in amounts below the RDA in Japan and the U.S. are helpful. But too much soy and any amount of genetically modified soy in your diet are dangerous to your health.
We applaud Dr. Weil’s efforts but wish he would open his eyes to the increased statistics in cancer, diabetes and other illnesses that are caused by genetically modified foods.
I believe the article is mentioning GMO Soy. I don’t feel this is internet ‘paranoia’ but if someone can proof me wrong on the fact that GMO products are GOOD for me. Then I will be the first to start a campaign supporting it! Until then, call it what you want.
Of course soy is great. I believe in consuming soy, when I choose to, for example by eating edamame or soy nuts. But why are we bombarded with these two ingredient (Soy and CORN) It appears that absolutely everything contains soy (soy lecithin) and corn (High Fructose Corn Syrup or Corn Sugar). Hmmm, I know why, this is a rhetorical question. The answer is profit.
Dr. Weil, What is your take on “GMO” SOY, CORN and BEETS?
Thank you.
Please don’t be fooled by the comments of Dr. Andrew Weil. Dr. Weil would like you to believe that he is an altruistic doctor who does not profit from his sponsorships and his outrageously priced nutritional supplements, since he allegedly donates all of this income into the Weil Foundation.
But he is the Weil Foundation and the Weil Foundation fails to report its activities. Publicly available financial numbers for the Weil Foundation are virtually nonexistent, which is something not found in legitimate charities.
Is there anything more suspicious than someone who creates a tax exempt non-profit group and then fails and refuses to provide transparency despite repeated requests from investigative reporters who are suspicious of his actions and intentions?
What is known is that Dr. Weil is contractually bound to the drug industry (at least drugstore.com) receiving more than $2.5 million in 2003 alone.
It is also known that drugstore.com agreed to make monthly payments to Weil, Weil Lifestyle. Pursuant to the agreement, Drugstore.com pays Weil Lifestyle Monthly Sales Commissions and makes a monthly donation to the Foundation. This is Big Pharma money and obvious influence.
According to a lawsuit filed against Dr. Weil,
“Drugstore.com has paid in excess of $3.9 million in Monthly Sales Commissions, Donations, and Quarterly True-Ups (‘Royalties’). In addition to these amounts, Drugstore.com also pays a monthly Honorarium directly to Weil.”
The lawsuit also states that,
“Drugstore.com is suing Andrew Weil, M.D. and Weil Wellness LLC for breach of a contract… the contact called for ‘honorarium’ payments totaling $1.6 million to Weil and minimum royalty payments totaling $12.4 million to the company from September 2003 through June 2008.”
The Health Wyze Report points out that:
“Andrew Weil hopes to eventually force all naturopathic practitioners to hold at least 4-year degrees, and to be officially licensed.
Those who practice alternative health care would be forced to become the very people that they have been trying to escape from.
It would rest control of alternative medicine into the hands of the American Medical Association if naturopathic and holistic healers were indeed required to be licensed by the same medical schools that teach orthodox medicine.
It would constitute Dr. Weil’s greatest gift to Big Pharma and to the A.M.A.”
Drugstore.com works for Big Pharma and advances their interests like a puppet on a string. Why else would Dr. Weil (their spokesperson) take time away from his websites, medical practice, media interviews and duties at the University for Arizona to write an extensive (and incorrect) comment on our blog?
Dr Weil has also received warnings from the FDA regarding “Unapproved/Uncleared/Unauthorized Products Related to the H1N1 Flu Virus; and a Notice of Potential Illegal Marketing of Products to Prevent, Treat or Cure the H1N1 Virus.” His products were illegal and he didn’t seem to care.
Dr. Weil, I now understand why you have an FDA complaint against you. We do not sell vitamins. We do not sell drugs. We do not sell soy or soy products. But you do on your site and make millions in profits selling drugs at exorbitant prices.
It is interesting that you know the harm of soy, yet defend it. Is this so you can sell more products on your site?
I am very disappointed in your lack of research and willingness to put this propaganda out there.
I suggest everyone take caution and read the FDA formal complaint about you and your site. The FDA recommended maximum dose of soy per day is as stated in our article. The soy problems found are confirmed by years and countless studies by scientists around the world. Their interest was in saving lives.
By the way, thyroid disease has increased per year along with the increase of breast cancer and cancer since the increase in soy and genetically modified soy has been introduced into the diet at such massive quantities.
Our goal is to inform the public and to help people get well. We also believe in prevention. Both of us almost died from buying into propaganda such as the one you just reported.
The proof is always in the pudding. My husband is out of a wheelchair and I am no longer in third stage kidney, liver, pancreatic, spleen failure kissing deaths door. We only allow organic food into our daily meals and Thank God for the truth we now know about processed food and the protectors of their profits.
The facts advanced in our books, represent heavily researched materials from over 3000 research books and articles. The research is from independent studies, which means the data is by scientist and medical professionals interested only in telling the truth.
If you had not received a call from someone at Big Food or Big Pharma looking for a paid assassin, you would not have noticed our blog.
If readers do not want to believe my comments, please read Doctor Andrew Weil: Whose Side Is He Really On? The report can be found at http://healthwyze.org/index.php/dr-andrew-weil-and-integrative-medicine.html Also, please see the FDA complaint against Dr. Weil.
Somehow the large supermarkets and food retailers don’t wont to upset people who come in day by day and buy their favorite food product. Instead of increasing its price and most certainly scaring away a certain cash flow, they rather tinker with the contents of the food package in order to reduce costs. Manufacturing the original from its genuine ingredients would either result in a 50 to 100% price increase or, when keeping the price leveled, a 100% certainty that the product will be removed from the shelves. Soy, I think, should only be seen as a cost reducing ingredient. Tampering with Soy to make it consumable is reason enough to dump that once favorite product. Genuine good food has increased in price at least twice. Staying healthy has become a costly venue.
The cost is artificial these days. Many articles point out that organic foods cost less to produce than genetically modified foods. In areas where more than one store sells organic foods, and there are local farmers’ markets, the price drops out of competition. For example, a local market proudly sells organic potatoes for $5.00 each. At the farmers’ markets, you can purchase an organic potato for $1.00 each (5 for $5.00).
It is about greed and the Big Food painting organics as expensive to avoid competition. Shop carefully and organics can be as cheap as junk food and in many instances even cheaper.
I’ll offer a simple rule of thumb: if something is pushed hard with a lot of commercials and placed positive stories in the media, it is probably bad for you. The examples are numerous and soy is just one. The elites put fluoride (a substance with toxicity similar to arsenic and lead, and with no positive systemic effects what so ever) in your tap water for crying out loud! They want to harm you, it’s that simple.
