I will be the first to admit that when two books arrived on my door step a few months ago I was less than enthusiastic. They appeared large, and somewhat daunting, even the titles bothered me Arthritis, Inflammation, Gout, Crohn’s, IBD, or IBS and Mannie’s Diet And Enzyme Formula . My wife giggled as she unwrapped them ‘Oh you are going to love these’.
I put on a brave face and with less than sincerity in my voice gave her my ‘knowledge is power’ speech!
It was with grim determination that I picked up the two books and retired to my favorite reading area out on the front porch. I do not suffer from Arthritis, Crohn’s, or Gout, but what I found was a treasure trove of information that is applicable to everyone.
This started a love hate relationship with the authors Mannie Barling and his wife Ashley Brooks. I love them for the great information that they have imparted in me, and I hate them because I can not pick up a food item without scrutinizing the damn list of ingredients! Most of which are very detrimental to health.
On this weeks program we explored Mannie Barling’s strange odyssey with health and nutrition, a story that started many years ago, but came to fruition in 1997 with him being diagnosed with Colon Cancer. Two operations later, and 10 feet of intestines removed, the medical world explained that he would be as good as new. The 10 feet of Mannie that he no longer had to carry around was unimportant, in the grand scheme of things it would have no effect on his quality of life. That was one prognosis that proved to be not quite accurate.
Although Mannie Barling and Ashley Brooks do discuss the subject in their books, Saturdays program reveals far more than is in print. Mannie Barling faced a huge battle, one that he found himself either helpless in bed for weeks on end, or in a wheelchair. To hear his story is a very sobering adventure.
Each week I like to offer a challenge to Mannie and Ashley. Feed a family of 4 a great meal that is nutritious, tasty, does not break the bank, and can be prepared in under 90 minutes. Last week it was Pork Tenderloin, this week a Chicken and Sausage BBQ.
As a lover of food I am always curious to discover new delectations to excite my taste buds. Mannie Barling and Ashley Brooks never cease to amaze me. Prior to meeting them I had always considered good food and food that was good for you at opposite ends of the taste spectrum. Food that was good for you was either completely bland and tasteless, or required more herbs than could be found in a middle age apothecary. I have been proved wrong. They use simple ingredients, and simple cooking processes.
This week I tried to amaze the pair with a new ‘feature’ the Bad Boy Food Of The Week’. My choice was the KFC Double Down, a chicken burger with no bread. Loaded in salt and fat, I was sure I had a winner. Not so! Off air they explained that there are far worse, some of it skulking in your kitchen cabinet! They are holding out on me, but I am sure that in our next program all will be revealed.
We also touched on the growing problem of Corn. Whats not to love about a Corn Roast, or even Corn on the cob simply boiled? Unfortunately most Corn is not grown for direct human consumption, it is GMO (Genetically Modified) and not fit for humans. It is used as a fattening agent for animals. It is used extensively on cattle in the final fattening process, but, a clock starts ticking. The cow must be killed before the corn kills it!
Corn also is the key ingredient in High Fructose Corn Syrup. A product that you not find on any Supermarket shelf, yet one that is on every Supermarket shelf! Mannie and Ashley have much to say on this subject.
