Every so often, a piece of nonfiction takes a good step closer to a more complete understanding of how to heal deep emotional and spiritual wounds.

One such book is Memory in the Cells: How to Change Behavioral Patterns and Release the Pain Body by Luis Angel Diaz. If for no other reason, the author is to be commended on a work that cuts little slack when it comes to emotions. Diaz tells it like it is. He exhorts readers to “stop pretending they don’t feel what they are feeling,” adding that supposedly civilized adults “are experts in emotional dishonesty.”

Amen to that! Think about all the games people play at work or in their personal relationships simply because they refuse to be up front with others or themselves about how they are feeling. Like Diaz, I also am an energy healer and I know the critical importance of emotions in healing the whole self.

One big reason we cannot heal, Diaz argues, is that we ignore, deny, or repress our emotions (often through legal or illegal drugs). Yet, he points out correctly, emotions are messages about the state of our innermost being. And when we resist our emotions in any way, we only prolong unnecessary suffering.

Diaz has developed an approach to healing that he calls Cellular Memory Release (CMR). It has two distinct parts. The first is Pain Body Release (PBR) and the second is Neural Net Reprogramming (NNR). His clients first explore their pain in order to move it out of the energy field of their consciousness. After they have accomplished this, they take the second step and reprogram the thoughts that have caused them so many problems.

Diaz also talks about what he labels “false pain” and how his clients follow their pain in order to free themselves from it. This discussion can be a little intimidating and even off-putting for those who are terrified of their own emotions and cannot imagine that anything they have suffered could ever be considered false. But hear him out, because he has many useful points to make about why we suffer more than we might otherwise if we were wiser about our emotions.

One of his savviest insights is that human behavior arises out of our feelings, not the other way around. This appears to be news still to some of the more hidebound practitioners of traditional psychology and psychiatry, who ignore the effects of emotions on behavior and overall health because they have no way to address them other than to drug them into silence and submission. Diaz discusses recent studies that reveal the physiological effects of emotions on the body.

Toward the end of the book, the author includes case studies from his practice. I would have liked to have seen those examples of emotional release and healing at the start of the book. They are, after all, the entire point of the CMR healing modality. I also would have liked the examples to have been presented in a little less clinical a manner and more as intimate healing narratives that make the “why” of emotional healing obvious. Not every reader will be as fascinated by the author’s initial discussion of energy as I was simply because of my background.

There are other missing elements as well, including the pivotal role of self-judgment in harming the energy field of human consciousness and the effects of the magnetic component of consciousness. Overall, Memory in the Cells is a useful read to reinforce and expand the growing awareness that we ignore our emotional health at the peril of our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
