The woman babysitting a Florida girl the night she went missing has reportedly told investigators she heard Haleigh Cummings being attacked before she vanished.
Misty Croslin’s attorney Robert Fields said Tuesday that the18-year-old told investigators the attack came after a cousin came to the Satsuma mobile home looking for a gun belonging to Haleigh’s father, Ronald Cummings.
Fields said “Haleigh was a substitute” for the missing gun.
Neither Fields nor the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office immediately returned our phone messages or e-mails.
The sheriff’s office has questioned Croslin’s credibility, saying investigators don’t believe 5-year-old Haleigh was abductedby a stranger in February 2009.
Croslin was in court in St Johns County where pleaded no contest Tuesday to drug trafficking charges. Under normal circumstances, the charge carries a minimum mandatory sentence of 25 years in prison. However, Fields said he will make the case for youthful offender status at her sentencing, which is set for Oct. 8.
In this case, investigators found she had 155 oxycodone pills, with a weight of 70.7 grams and a value of $800. The plea entered on one count in St. Augustine Tuesday morning mirrors the no contest pleas entered on several drug-trafficking charges in Putnam County on Monday.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous requests for an official comment regarding a statement made earlier today by Attorney Robert Fields. For those outlets not aware, Attorney Fields is legal counsel for Misty Croslin.
Attorney Fields made a statement to media outlets that after Misty Croslin’s arrest, she informed investigators what happened the night Haleigh Cummings went missing, and what happened to Haleigh Cummings.
Since the onset of this investigation, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has been asked to comment on information obtained during the investigation. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has always taken the firm stance that any information obtained in this case is not to be released, and any investigative strategies will not be discussed. The Haleigh Cummings investigation is far too important to be jeopardized by releasing this type of sensitive information.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will not be participating in any formal interviews or providing statements regarding this morning’s events at this time. The main concern of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is finding Haleigh Cummings and returning her home to her family.

I think Fields screwed da pooch same as Werter. Fields says he needs 3 hours to present his case at sentencing…why? He said there was overwhelming evidence Misty did what she did and that’s why she wasn’t going to trial. They aren’t going to give Misty any Youth Offender program, not now.

Somewhere in Fields’ statement he did say Joe was wtih other relatives at the time Haleigh went missing, so who was driving that van and getting it into an accident? No matter which way you look at that statement, it also lends itself to maybe mean somebody else drove it, other than Joe or Chelsea. Too many stories, too many erroneous statements out there.
I get their statement to mean this is not what happened because they say any information they have has not been released. What fields released is not what they have. No way would LE have let us hear those tapes of Tommy and Misty naming Joe if this was the truth. LE has said they wont releae anything that could jeaprodize the investigation so those parts would have been redacted. jmo
LE also explains that Fields is the attorney for Misty. I guess that could mean he is doing his job in defending his client.

I have a problem with the Joe story.I can’t see any of them staying in jail to cover for him.I think they would have spilled the truth long ago if he was to blame.(not saying he did not do it)

I typed my thoughts on the other thread before I saw the new ones. I’m just wondering how misty could see jo put Haleigh in a “black bag if she was hiding under the covers with jr? and how did she know it was a “van” door that she heard closing, and why in the #$@% didn’t she call 911 emmediately after? and where was her worthless brother? If this is true, all this coud have been prevented with one phone call….and don’t hand me that “I was scared of jo” crap, it’s bull, you were hanging posters with him without a care or fear in the world…UGGGG I’m so pissed I could scream!

Misty was under the covers with Jr, why not call 911 right then? The operators would have heard Haleigh’s screams and 911 would have been dispatched immediately to the MH. JMO

After the 18 months of pure HELL that her family has had, couldn’t he at least give them this one day to honor HaLeigh’s birthday? Fields, in all this time, has never spoken to the main stream media. He has only spoke to AH. And he chooses today, HaLeigh’s birthday, to speak up? I think it’s disgusting and disrespectful to HaLeigh and everyone that loves her!

These attys are going to say and do whatever is in the best interest of their client plain and simple.
On the flip side, LE is not going to say or do anything to jeopardize their case. They are not going to tip their hand, release evidence or get sucked into any atty schemes or give statements just to make the press and public happy.
Personally, I don’t know what to think about this case anymore. Too many twists and turns and without the knowledge and info that LE has, none of us will probably be able to figure this out. We can speculate, we can vent, rant and rave but it probably won’t do us a bit of good.
Do I have 100% faith in LE? No. But the alternative leaves me with the thought that SOMEONE has gotten away with the kidnapping / murder of this precious child and I for one cannot let my mind go there. Not yet. So let’s try to keep the faith for Haleigh’s sake. Let’s pray like we’ve never prayed before. And let’s not put a whole lot of faith or read too much into any statement made by one of these attys because I can guarantee you there is a motive behind anything they say or do and it probably has nothing to do with the truth or finding Haleigh.

Tobias - yes, just like Bozo, Fields’ statement is backfiring and will bite his client in the backside, and rightfully so. For Misty and Tommy (and Grandma Hollars for that matter) to talk about this child in the manner they have is beyond repulsive to me. If this story is NOT true then HOW could they torture Haleigh’s loved ones with the thought of her being “attacked”, thrown in a bag, screaming in terror, tossed in a van, weighted down and tossed in a river possibly while still alive. HOW do you say that if it isn’t true? My only conclusion is they’ve said it because it is true (which I don’t believe it is true - at least not in its entirety) or they said it to save their own skins. Either way they’ve become the worst bottom feeders on the planet in my book and there is a special place in HE77 for them. But that’s just my opinion.
I guess Fields has never lost a loved one and doesn’t realize that her birthday is so important to her family.
I lost my brother when he was 33 and he would be 63 now, but each and every one of his birthdays has been a struggle for my family. We wonder what he would be doing, how he would look, etc. and HaLeigh’s family has to wonder if she is dead or alive and if she is alive they worry that she is being taken care of.
It is really sad that this happened at all, much less today. Robert Fields is Misty’s attorney, true, but what could he have accomplished by telling this story today? The prosecution may have come forward with the story at her sentencing hearing to show that she not only is a drug dealer, but a sick person who wouldn’t even help a child and deserves the maximum time allowed in prison but Fields could have addressed it at that time. IMO

JB you are right about the fact that these are the worst of the worst. I am starting to believe that Misty did something to HaLeigh and had Tommy help her hide the body. If Joe had taken her, why didn’t she call 911 if she had a phone or run to the neighbors if she didn’t as soon as the van door shut?
Even if she was scared of Joe she knows that LE would arrest him as soon as he was picked up with HaLeigh. How could Joe hurt her from jail? If he got out for any reason you can bet Ronald would have taken matters in his own hands.
You are also correct that ranting and raving is not doing any good, so I think I will get busy doing something else.

I don’t understand. Isn’t this basically the same story that helped initiate the Shell Harbor search? A variation on the theme that “JO did it?” I’m not surprised if M told LE this when she was arrested or any time since then.
Also, she is pretty much fighting for her own life right now. She’s lookin at what - 200 years?
And she’s also pretty much at the mercy of a “lawyer” (to put it nicely) who heavily influences if not outright decides what he’s going to announce to who and when. I wouldn’t expect M to know what’s best in that way.
If I was in her shoes I would be totally dependent on my lawyer’s advice. I have no knowledge or experience and I ain’t no uneducated 18 year old either.
If I’m going to be mad at anyone (and I am) I’ll choose Fields (and maybe LE because I can’t figure out where they are or what they’re doing or have done).

Jules - It is very true that Misty’s story does NOT hold water. That is why I don’t believe all of it. There may be some truth sprinkled in there and this could very well be part of what happened to Haleigh. But I really don’t believe Joe was involved. I think the guilty party is a little closer to home and I do believe Tommy and Misty KNOW what happened. At least that is my top theory. Ron’s actions lead me to believe he knows the truth as well. But again, JMO.
Ranting CAN be a good release for what has been one of the most frustrating cases I’ve ever seen. But it can also raise your blood pressure and cause other stress related issues so I just caution everyone to take a deep breath and keep things in perspective.
Usually one of these attys or players pulls a stupid stunt that pushes us all over the edge and we fly into a frenzy of comments. Before long we’re like a tank of sharks during a feeding frenzy and we begin to turn on one another. Feelings get hurt, people get banned, Jan and Simon get irritated and we all end up with belly aches! LOL Just reminding everyone to not get too stressed out. It doesn’t get us anywhere!

I remain totally UNconvinced that the lawyers for Hope, T or M were honestly trying to “help” their clients. Everyone deserves adequate, honest, ethical representation and I don’t think those three lawyers provided it. I really don’t. I just have to ask myself, why?

I have read the snippet vaq posted earlier and I find it highly suspicious that LE classified this a homicide and yet by their own admission they don’t know what happened to Haleigh. If they dropped the case for which she got her VOPs, how do they convict her of VOP?
Today had to be very hard on Crystal Sheffield, spending part of Haleigh’s birthday sitting in the courtroom to see if Misty would reveal anything then to have Misty’s attorney announce this horrible story.
I am also frankly tired of hearing Flo Hollars and her statements. For someone who allegedly recently suffered a stroke, and also so overly medicated in her last interview (whether by choice or prescribed by a doctor), why do reporters ask for her opinion? I thought recently I heard she was estranged from both sides of the family–The Croslins and the Overstreets–so what does she have to add that hasn’t all ready been said? Is she that much of a media hound or does she feel that reward money slipping from her grasp? I can’t figure her out, but I do believe her motivation is plain–Money and Fame Hungry. Frankly, in this case we have way more of these types of people than I can stand! JMO
She violated the conditions of probation just by being around drugs she didnt need to use them or buy them so I guess she will be spending the rest of her probation in jail.??? jmo

That’s exactly the same thing they said in their first press conference. They indicated M had inconsistencies and then asked the public to come forward - like anyone who knows anything about that night. So, back to square one. Again.

I usually agree with you on most things, however, I can’t agree on the posting of photos. I think it’s bad enough to be linked to the crime via family members-relations. What good will it do to expose Timmy’s children to more insanity.

Why didn’t PCSO publicly state that Tommy is a suspect, or Misty for that matter? They didn’t mind stating Tommy is a suspect in his recent sentencing, why not today? They have also stated before they do not consider JO a suspect, but did not state that today when confronted with Fields’ statement after court? Why not? A lot of contradictory statements made by LE at different times in this investigation. A lot of statements they could clear up but have failed to– like Ron’s alibi for example (even though today they made the statement that they do not consider him a suspect). I do not believe they are diligently investigating this case as they claim–I believe they are waiting on a confession from Misty and/or Tommy. I believe they have NO CLUE what happened and NO EVIDENCE whatsoever to tie anyone to this disappearance. They had no evidence to classify this a homicide, but in no way will they admit they made a mistake. That’s just my opinion though.
