Every where I look I am bombarded by hand picked BP employees telling me how comitted they are to cleaning up the Gulf.
My name is (fill in the blank) I was born here on the Gulf, this is my home, and BP is committed to staying here as long as it takes… blah blah blah….
What does all of the damage control PR equate to? A pile of Bull to the people impacted directly and indirectly!
BP are crowing about the enormous amount of money that they have already spent, and the amount of money still in escrow. But how is this money being spent? In some ways it is reminiscent of the government and those little bits of ‘pork’ put into bills.
I for one would love to hear an explanation of how giving $75 million to the Tourism Board in Florida to fund advertising helps the clean up effort is beyond me. OK, $75 million is a relative drop in the $3 billion spent, but it did not save a single oil stained bird, it did not pick up a single tar ball. It is pure pork.
If I was cynical I might view that $75 million as a payoff. I might also wonder how many others there are?
If you watch CNN for 30 minutes you will get what seems like 15 minutes of BP adverts and 30 seconds of very ‘soft’ reporting. The cynical part of me again begs the question, how much are BP paying for these adverts to air? Is this once again money doing the talking?
If that $75 million plus whatever they are paying for their TV ads was put into the hands of local communities to directly address the pollution how much could be achieved?
I would rather see $100 spent on resolving a small but quantifiable problem than $1000 spent telling us how hard they are working to spend that $100.
Am I wrong?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHi Simon, I have followed the “oil spill” since the beginning, so I have so many thoughts on “them”….They are liars to the inth degree, backed by our own govt…In my best estimation both of whom should be tried for treason and shot..period…BP can give monies for the “tourist” fund if they wish, but it will never make it right for those who lost their lives,,,and those who I think will loose their lives in the near future for all the corexit9500 they used to deguise the amount of oil that actually came out of that hole……Now they say the oil is 3/4 gone,,,,,gone where, I ask you,,,,,that oil is under the water line so no one can see how much is out there…there are mountains of oil in the water column…dID YOU KNOW bp BOUGHT UP KEY WORDS from google and yahoo,,sending the curious to what ever site that was favorable to them….BP photoshopped pictures,,for public comsumption…They held all the news media hostage and threatened serious fines for all who would go near the spill…TO KEEP ALL OF US IN THE DARK…..With the help of our govt they restricted air flight over the spill and much more,,,much more they did to hide their crime……Yes if you listen to the hearings on capital hill you will see the negligance and just plain ole “hail mary” attitude they had to drill this well….devil may care..EVEN WHEN OUR OWN EPA TOLD THEM TO STOP WITH THE COREXIT9500,,THEY DID NOT…they continued to use with NO regard to human life……..Never in my 60 years have I been so enlightened as to what the almighty dollar means to our govt and the oil industry……..Bp has contracted scientist all along the coast to work for them, and these scientist signed contracts not to disclose the conclusions rendered once their reserch has been done,,,(this is what I read)..I could not swear to this, but I certainly believe it…….The poor people down there, small children, as well as children yet to be born will be poisoned by the use of the desperant,,,heaven only knows for how long…..I could rant on and on and on,,,but,,,, I will close with one more thought………….I have heard they are allowing some of the commercial fishermen to continue with their livelihood….tell me who in their right mind will eat anything that comes out of the Gulf of Mexico for years to come???????? Oh and by the way, Gov Crist got on TV telling people to bring their children on down, everything was fine and beaches were white,,even though the water was a toxic soup,,,he should be ashamed ..
Southernvagirl: good in formative post. If only all people could see the extent of lies these companies will buy to say. It is becoming more difficult to find true journalism. What a legacy we leave our children. An environment ruined from cooperate greed. A world were environmentalism can be bought on non bio-degradable legal forms.
Bio,,thanks,,by the wat, notice the lack of interest in this topic…..People have been bamboozeled to believe everything they are told with out futher investigation….While those who sleep or jus dont care to know the truth of the “oil spill”, I can tell you there is nothing you could tell me about this situation I have not already read and investigated to my self….I used to wonder why the Lord did not bless me with grandchildren,,among many reasons I could guess,,,I feel blessed not to have little ones to grow up in such a corupt world as we have in this day and time….For many down there in the Gulf region time will tell as to the devastation the event has caused…..people should be shouting off the roof tops,,,wanting to know the truth about this whole thing and HOW will this event will play out and at least give the good people down there a choice to stay and risk the high rate of cancers, I believe will come to past or the choice to leave….Very few, I believe even have a clueand sad to say alot of them dont even want to know,,,cause even if they did what could they do…….When the president said he was sending his own family down there to vacation, to swim in the gulf,,,,have you seen where they actually went……Right after this was announced,,,, I saw where the Obamas went to MAINE to vacation…You couldnt get any farther from the Gulf unless you went out of the country which now for this next vacation the (Marie antwonette) of the USA has traveled to Spain to vacation…….So what does that tell people…….This thing is long in the future and our govt would have us believe the oil is almost gone……I will never be one of those who rides in the back seat with my eyes covered up……I see clearly what is going on and I am ashamed of my country,,,really those in command I am ashamed of,,but for them it is just another day…
Simon, I would be very curious to read your input to this topic, like in response to my conclusions. I can assure you, I DO know what I speak of…I have crossed referenced my cross references…..The dollars BP is giving for the “tourist fund” doesnt even touch the tip of the iceberg where this subject is concerned…in reference to what BP is going to leave the people down in the Gulf,,
