Bellesiles on his book, "Arming America", a most fantastic example of outcome-based research: "Er....the dog ate my homework".

Bellesiles on his essay: "Er....the dog told me lies".

OK, so his essay is at least one thing that he didn't just make up. Admittedly, he was lied to. However, when Bellesiles wrote Arming America and released it right before the 2000 election....a clear political ploy for gun control....did he really think that no one would do thier own research on his claims?

Consrquently, everything he says must be checked for fact. He should consider himself lucky that he's allowed to teach anywhere.

Actually, I'm surprised that the Brady Bunch hasn't snapped him up and put him on thier payroll.

I think it's a little extreme to state that the right has it in for Bellesiles. Seems to me that once you have been caught falsifying data to support an argument anything you create deserves an especially hard look. Now the left has a valid case against him. It was they who heaped praise on his original book since it supported their agenda. Getting caught out in a series of provable lies and being stripped of his award certainly damaged the anti gun cause, so if nothing else the left has a legitimate gripe over his incompetence.

Bellesiles believed the liar, because that's what he wanted to believe. His world-view insists that even during the fiercest fighting of American Revolution, our Forefathers must have insisted that gun-control be the order of the day
