The Sherpas are poor, and they now are finding a little prosperity in the dangerous job of guiding outsiders to scale the mountains. But some of them die doing so.

As for their "fame": Quick, what is the name of the Sherpa who accompanied Edmund Hillary?

I agree with almost everything you said, but have to point out that the Sherpas that were a part of the team: they are getting part of the glory. It might not be the media glory the boy is getting, but they are getting a part of the glory of him making the summit. Those Sherpas are walking away with the notoriety of having put that child up there on the summit to break a record, thus their feat goes down in the mountaineering history and record books, is recognized by the mountaineering community for their success to the point that come next climbing season, it means they will be able to up their fees as Sherpa guides.

In this day and time, majority of the Sherpas that control the climbs are professional mountaineers that are there for the wealth factor and the thrill of the climb, not the struggling to make a living factor. They don't go unrecognized for their work: everything they do is documented and acknowledged. Also, everything a Sherpa guide does comes with a price: climbers have to provide them with equipment, clothing, food, insurance, on top of paying their daily fee, paying extra fees to get across certain spots, as well as bonus fees for making it to the summit. All of the financing that goes into paying a Sherpa guide leads to them making enough of a material and financial gain to be considered wealthy in their country.

To me, the Sherpa guides that willingly assisted this kid to the summit are at fault right along side his parents. Those guides know how dangerous the climb is, but all they saw was notoriety amongst their mountaineering peers and a nice pay out, so they went along with it. Thank goodness, though, the child survived: all while his dad, step-mom and 3 Sherpas rode his record-breaking coat tails.
