The race is on. According to recent polling, the top candidates for the 2008 presidential election are Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Dems and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani for the GOP.
Rounding out the GOP field is Sen. John McCain close behind Giuliani and Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice.
Trailing Hillary Clinton for the Dem nod is Sen. Barack Obama and former Sen. John Edwards.
A Clinton and Giuliani match-up would be like Yogi Berra said, “deja vu all over again”. In 2000, Giuliani dropped out of the New York 2000 Senate race against Hillary Clinton after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
It’s still a long way off from the election, but it is noteworthy that the field of leaders does not include a Governor. In the past, Governors often have risen to the top. In recent history, former Governors Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush come to mind.
Likely attractive “dark horse” candidates would be New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson for the Dems and Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for the GOP. Stay tuned.
