If you were a fan of Janis Joplin then this DVD would be interesting to you for sure. I remember listening to her music, specifically “Me and Bobby McGee”. In fact the song was used on the last album she was recording just before her death. Although the entire album was not completed when she died, there was enough material that they could use to put the album together which also includes “Mercedes Benz”.

On October 3, 1970 Janis was suppose to go to Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles to listen to the instrumental track for Nick Gravenites song “Buried Alive in the Blues” but she never showed up. When she failed to show up John Cooke, the road manager for Full Tilt Boogie, went to where Janis had been living since August 24th, the Landmark Motor Hotel (now named Highland Gardens Hotel) to check on her. When he entered her room he found her dead on the floor. The official cause of death was an overdose of heroin, possibly with side effects of alcohol. Cook believes that Joplin had been accidentally been given heroin that was apparently more potent than normal. He believes this because several of the dealer’s other customer also overdosed that same week that Joplin died.

Janis Joplin was cremated in Los Angeles and her ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean from an airplane and along Stinson Beach. The world lost a great American singer, songwriter and music arranger on October 4th, 1970.

In this DVD, Janis Joplin – Final 24: Her Final Hours, her roots are traced of her addiction and they used archive footage, dramatic reenactments and interviews with her closest friends, including her brother and former band members to piece together the last 24 hours of a voice of a generation.

I was only 15 years old when it was announced that Janis Joplin had died. I remember feeling so sad when I received the news. Janis was one of those entertainers that will live on probably forever through her.
