New York Democrat Charles Rangel is planning to introduce legislation to bring back the draft. His reasons for introducing this legislation is to suggest that if we had a draft prior to invading Iraq, then we would not have been careless to invade Iraq without proof of them having weapons of mass destruction. He feels that if the sons of the people in Congress had to go to war, then they would not have allowed President Bush to go into the country without a plan, putting all the citizens of America in jeopardy.

According to the New Haven Register, White House officials, US Department of Defense, and Members of Congress all say that there will not be another draft. Despite this response, the Selective Service System had posted a notice on their website stating that they were recruiting citizens to be members of the local draft boards. When the media picked up on this posting, SSS immediately took it down and said that it was routine.

Rangel says that if the US plans to invade other countries, then a draft would be necessary. According to World Net Daily ,

“I don’t see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft,” he said. “If we’re going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can’t do that without a draft.”

The Selective Service taking the post down, the continuation of troop casualties, the ongoing talks of the President and his administration of more security and troops in other countries, are all contributing to the public’s concern that a draft will be put in place. Most Americans are against a draft being reinstated, and therefore, if it does go through, it will meet with much resistance.
