I have heard some hugely asinine things in the past two weeks, but this tops the cake with burning candles…A Christian university–Trinity University–in Texas is being asked by students to remove “In the year of our Lord” from their diplomas. Let’s see… what part of Christian University is not understood? What part of Christian leaves out Jesus? Naturally it would be a Muslim student who considers it right and proper to even ask that the words be removed from the diploma all because “not every one believes in Jesus”. So what possessed him (or her, I’m not sure what gender) to earn a degree from the university in the first place?Get this…
The school’s student government association and a commencement committee already has thrown their support behind the proposal.Â
I must wonder if any of those students have ever read 2 Tim 1:8  Then do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, His prisoner. But suffer hardship with the gospel, according to the power of God…Or did they ever read 2 Tim 1:12  For which cause I also suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that He is able to guard my deposit until that Day. They want to “proudly display (their) diploma”, which is a virtual admission that if the words “year of our Lord” are on it, they won’t be proud to display it. How incredibly sad. It leads me to question the intelligence of the student, the student government association and the commencement committee. I understand there are some reasons a non-believer would go to a Christian school. Perhaps, it has the best reputation for certain curricula, but if one goes to Rome, one does not ask the Emperor to change clothes. This is just another indication of the “ME” society. It seems society feels entitled these days to think only about the here and now and only about Me rather than values and morals our forefathers built our nation with upon the foundation of Jesus Christ.Asking an institution to change what is close to the heart of more than one hundred years of Christian identity just because “we want to be proud to display our diploma and not everyone believes in Jesus” is beyond the pale of indignity; it is down right blushing.

First the Ten Commandments statue was taken out of the court house because it offended those who do not believe. That is their choice to whether to believe or not, but we should not me made to remove it just because they do not!!! . What about those of us that strongly believe? My son had a class where the were teaching about different cultures,there religions were included in this class.So he brought the book home,an said mom Look,they dont have Jesus in any of this.So the next day i inquired why.The teacher told me,they didnt allow anything pertaining to Jesus in school,it was to contervercial in school.But they were teaching on,other religions.So i refused for Dillon to take that class,while that was being taught.She was upset with me,but passed my son anyway.Because,I said its against our beliefs to have him taught this.An she had no choice but pass him.Or i would have sought higher ups to find out why that was allowed,an being forced on him,when nowhere were they allowing anything about Jesus.
Did you read where a little boy ,he had a class project to bring in something written about his hero.Well that little boys hero was Jesus,they removed his story,an his little picture.the other kept theirs.I dont know what happened about that.

Just one thing I’d like to rectify about this as a Trinity student—Trinity’s name comes not from the Holy Trinity but from the fact that three separate colleges came together as one to form a university. I am very dismayed that you neglected to point this out. We are not a Christian university.

I second what Molly said. As a Trinity University student, it irks me that news outlets are reporting on this issue without checking their facts.
Trinity’s name reflects its “Christian origins and the three regional Cumberland Presbyterian governing bodies that supported its institutional organization.” Trinity began as a Christian university, but:
“In 1969, at the initiation of the Presbyterian Church, Trinity entered into a covenant agreement with the regional synod that affirmed historical connections, but transformed Trinity into a private, independent University with a self-perpetuating board of trustees.”
I agree that keeping “in the year of our Lord” on the diplomas is the correct thing to do in order to acknowledge the Trinity’s religious and cultural history. Additionally, the use of “in the year of our Lord” has been around for centuries.
However, I find it absolutely appalling that people have used this issue to make hateful comments about the Muslim religion. Trinity is not a Christian school so asking why a “non-believer” would go there is nonsensical and irrelevant.

Jan57, are you talking about Madalyn Murray O’hair? She disappeared in 95 and was found along with her son and grandaughter buried in a shallow grave in Tx. She was evil and many credit her with the beginning of the moral decline in America.
They should just have their own atheist universities,(oh I forgot, we are on our way there with all of the universities with all the whining about Christianity being offensive)and leave the ones that want to support Christian concepts and values alone. The ones that are disturbed by those words should have just had it taken off their diploma. It makes no sense to me, in other countries they are not going to change their religious standards and beliefs for incoming Christians and such so why should we? We were very much founded on Christianity just like the other countries have their Islam, and such. Let it be.
To correct the misconceptions that seem to be prevalent on this board, I’d like to point out a few things. First of all, while it was a Muslim student who originally began this “movement,” if you will, MANY students at Trinity support the removal of the phrase. I do not count myself among them, but for people to be under the impression that it is just one or “less than a handful of students” is just simply wrong. Two of our student boards voted to remove the phrase. I strongly disagree with the removal, but many students including those of the Christian and Jewish faiths support the removal.
Once again, it is best to have all the facts before making assumptions.
I am a student at Trinity University, which is NOT a Christian school and hasn’t been for half a century. The name is a reference to the three schools that came together to form it. That’s why the school’s motto is: “From three, one.” In reality, Trinity is one of the most religiously diverse schools in the state and proudly presents itself as such. True, we have an active church on campus, but it has a meditation garden and a Muslim prayer room. It is inappropriate for such a school to keep a statement favoring one religion on its diplomas. The group that wants to keep the phrase is actually very small: the vast majority either don’t care or want to get rid of it.
It shouldn’t *matter* what religion the person who originally made the request belongs to, because they are making a claim based on an abstract proposition-that the diploma should not implicitly exclude those who do not believe in Christianity–quite a few Christians also agree with this. It’s about the type of community and community values we as a group wish to observe–inclusivity and respect for people who believe and think differently from ourselves–is that not American at its heart?

Well i knew it was someone who doesnt believe in what the founding fathers of the schools believed. I can completely understand why Muslim students may not wish to have “in the year of Our Lord” on their diplomas. However, the phrase is there both because of the history of its use in Western Civilization and because of the religious culture of the institution. Our university’s name reflects “its Christian origins and the three regional Cumberland Presbyterian governing bodies that supported its institutional organization.” This is a matter of Trinity’s tradition and culture.
As many know, A.D. (Anno Domini), is Latin for “in the year of Our Lord.” I highly doubt there would be as big of an issue if it said A.D. on the diploma rather than the English translation. In short, the words are there for the same reasons that “In God We Trust” is on U.S. currency and why the use of the phrase “in the year of Our Lord” is used in Article VII of the U.S. Constitution to describe the date. Those reasons are culture, tradition, and a recognition of origin.

I have a bit of a hard time following your comment due to grammar and spelling, but you seem to be suggesting that this is just one more issue in a sort of “religious warfare” going on in the country. You are certainly entitled to that opinion and I do see many attempts to undermine Christianity, but this issue should not be used to say hateful things of the Muslim religion.
