The Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association, with prodding by the Obama administration, have agreed to a framework essentially nationalizing what is to be taught in America’s schools.
Coverage in the media makes it sound like these standards will apply only to English and Math.
The problem arises in that English encompasses literature, which can play a major role in shaping the worldviews of students.
This is especially true since many leftwing academics think students should feast their minds on a steady diet of works that undermine the values preferred by parents.
For example, will students be required to read Harry Potter, which some parents might object to while others might not have so much of a problem with? Even worse is what will happen in regards to works that advocating additional sundry debaucheries such as fornication and suicide?
And though these standards are supposedly for public schools, what will happen to students in private schools that wish to maintain their academic independence?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThere is a huge disparity of curricula across school districts within states, as well as between states. Students going to college often go to out of state schools, so the colleges get a real mix of skills for their incoming freshman. My cousin was an associate English professor at a large university and ran remedial English classes for those who were not up to par. He said their reading and writing skills were pitiful and gave us some examples. Some of the sentences were hilarious and sounded like they came from sixth grade students. My grandmother, who was born in 1894, had superior reading, writing, and mathematical skills to the majority of people today.
How will the US compete in the world with so many poorly educated people? If we want the US to continue to be at the top, we have to educate our people and drag them, kicking and screaming, away from cell phones and video games. We have to develop english, math, and scrience skills in our young people or jobs in these fields will consist solely of foreign nationals. Our children will be working in gas stations and fast food restaurants, if they can find work.
People fight over local control of what is taught in their schools and are so shortsighted that they miss the point. Our young people will read Harry Potter (oh, the devil!) if they want, whether it is studied in school or not. The big picture is that we need national standards and curricula. These standards must be high in order to enable our children to reach their personal bests. We need this to survive as a nation.
