On January 14, 2010 a report came in about little two year old Aveion Malik Lewis being kidnapped. His stepdad, Brandon Lockett told police that three men broke into his home and knocked him out and took Aveion after tying up his 4 year old sister. He said they left a ransom note demanding $10,000. He even went as far as telling the police that the men took off in a white 1990 Chevy Blazer.
Even though an Amber Alert was issued for little Aveion, police were very skeptical of Brandon Lockett’s story about the baby being kidnapped especially since his mother, Morgan Lockett or Brandon were not very helpful in the investigation. Police Chief Joe Gaskins said, “We had some reservations about the stories that were being told, but considering the child, we couldn’t afford to assume that an abduction had not occurred so we certainly had to work it from the angle that there had been an abduction.â€
Eventually Brandon Lockett confessed that the baby was actually dead before he called the police and he just made up the kidnapping story. Lockett was arrested and charged with child neglect, improper disposal of a human body and obstruction of justice but at that time no murder charges had been filed against him.
After a search in landfill’s for the child’s body, the police reported that a body had been found bound and wrapped in plastic at the Smith Gap Landfill on Jan. 27 and they believed it to be that of Aveion Lewis.
Now a grand jury has handed down indictments against Brandon and Morgan Lockett, who according to her sister is pregnant now, for murder. It is said that this innocent baby was killed after being abused and neglected by his mother and stepdad for most of his short life. They say Morgan Lockett caused or allowed the baby to be tortured, tormented, mutilated, beaten or cruelly treated and she failed to provide care for his health since January 27, 2007, which is the day after he would have turned three years old, and she is being charged with that and Brandon is charged with the same thing beginning June 1, 2007.
According to Roanoke Commonwealth’s Attorney Donald Caldwell the evidence they have will show that both parents were aware of the abuse even though they will not release a cause of death.
Morgan’s sister, Cara Ward defends her sister’s part in this though, saying, “My sister’s only crime is marrying a deadbeat.†She says if there was any abuse going on her sister didn’t know anything about it.
Little Aveion was born with a medical condition that required him to have to have surgery. They had to remove part of his intestines. By the time he was 14 months old it was reported to Social Services that he was underweight and was being neglected by his mother. After investigating they found the boy only weighed just less than 9 lbs. They removed him from his home in May of 2008 and put him in foster care where he started gaining weight but for some reason they saw fit to return him to the care of his mother where he had been for the four months prior to him being reported missing.
The Lockett’s could face up to 55 years in prison if they are convicted on the murder, abuse and neglect charges. Personally if they are guilty of these charges, I don’t think 55 years each is long enough and they certainly should not be allowed around children anymore, even their own.
This innocent child looked like he was such a sweet little baby. How anyone can hurt a child, I will never understand. There are too many folks out there that can’t have children of their own that would love to have the chance to be parents even to adopted children. If you don’t want them, at least find them a good home to go to instead. Killing them is not the answer. They didn’t ask to be born but they do deserve a chance to a life just as much as any of us do.
Please if you know of any child being abused, report it to the authorities as many times as it takes to save that child’s life. That child may grow up one day and come to you and thank you for saving its life. God bless all the children. Bless their little innocent hearts.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackJan, Thank you for your dedication & love for these children. Another senseless & tragic ending….He was so precious….I will hate to hear the details of this case….
Why on earth did they return this precious child to those monsters? The social service’s department in that area failed this child miserably. If I were the foster parent that took care of this child and nursed him back to a healthy weight I would be asking some questions of the state. This is BS. This poor little guy didn’t stand a chance. Lock up the mom and stepdad and do to them what they did to this little fella until their lives are ended. That will send a message to the next person who thinks it is okay to starve, neglect and harm a child. Thank you Jan for keeping us informed of these horrific cases. However, I wish you had nothing to write about…No Sad News Today…would be a great headline. Pray for the children everyone.
tortured, tormented, mutilated, beaten or cruelly treated . What kind of inhuman being does this to a baby, much less its own baby?
Sick, heart-wrenchingly sick…
These people should be facing murder charges. This is disgusting and when this woman has her new baby it should be taken away from her ASAP.
Jan, I am crying so so hard right now and my hands are shaking…looking at this precious little guy, I am so horrifed just thinking what every day was like for him..it looks like from the picture he was in daycare when he was much younger; If his monster mother and step dad didn’t want him after they got him back, the poor little guy would have atleast had decent “monitoring” by a daycare staff. I’ve noticed a disturbing trend that abused and neglected babies and toddlers are usuallly “hidden” away in their torturous homes so nobody will find out. It is my theory that when Social Services stops the monitoring of a child and they relinquish custody back to the parents, that those babies should be enrolled in some sort of daycare program. Therefore, if any abuse or neglect is occuring, it would be identified immediately. Of course, no states have money for that, right? It is time for all of us to storm the capitol and make this happen. Why do states even have Social Services if no monies are given to these causes? Maybe if we take all these pictures of these little victims, and just plaster them everywhere, then things might change. This MUST BE REFORMED. My neighbor is a state trooper here in Virginia.(I just moved here this past summer from Louisiana) I ask him about stories like this, and he gets tears in his eyes and just walks away….
Jan, I would also like to convey my sympathies to u for ur pain…I know no amount of time ever makes it better. Have faith that one day you WILL BE WITH THEM, HOLD THEM, and FINALLY have the chance to be their MOMMY…their waiting patiently, and their very lucky and blessed to have a MOMMY like you. I truly believe that God does have a plan for everyone, and u r living that plan; the little innocent ones need you down here right now, without people like you, they would have no voice.
Another baby tormented and murdered by his parents.
WTH will this stop?
What cowards would kill a defenseless innocent child like Aveion when there are countless couples just yearning for a child like him.
We must be their voice because it’s obvious that these children can’t speak for themselves until it’s much too late.
What chills me now is wondering if his big sissy had to witness his murder, she surely had to witness his abuse….she was probably abused as well…SO sad!
I read a story not too long ago that haunts me still!! A 7 yr old girl had been sent to school with a literal crushed spot in her skull. It had been stuffed with a papertowel and had weeve tracts glued over top. The shcool officals found out when the child reported to the nurses office with a headache….I bawled when I read that one. Can you image!? Her skull had been crushed in almost the size of her own fist and was sent to school, with no medical attention….it’s just amazing she survived! This is crazy!!!
This is very tragic and horrifying. He was such an adorable little baby. I pray they both get everything that is coming to them. I know the sister wants to defend her sis, but she knew what was going on with her son and did nothing to stop it.
I wish there would be a new Death penalty law that states you must die the same way you murdered the innocent. The needle is just to painless. They need to feel what their victim felt!!
Anyone who lives in this area (and I do) and followed this case from the beginning knew the mother and stepfather were lying from the get-go. Good for LE in that area for being on top of things, I am so sorry for this little guy, he never should have been returned to his mother
Why wasn`t these parents in jail for child abuse? Why did they even get this child back? It boggles the mind how parents who harm their children get a second chance to finally kill them. The motto for social services is “Families First” but it should be changed to “Children First”. Social Services is their voice. Start saying no to these abusive parents and start protecting the lives of these beautiful children. These parents should have lost the right to raise this beautiful boy when they abused him the first time. No amount of rehabilitation is going to help these people. They are evil and they should die! Its become a sickening fact that giving children back to abusive parents(especially at the extent of this case) that they will ultimately kill their victims.
Robin I couldn’t agree with you more. Its a crying shame when a starving child is returned back to its parents only to be killed- this case has had red flags all over it from the word go. But, in stead of finding the child a loving caring home to go to (other than any of the family members who watched his abuse take place) CPS returned him back to his abusers. rehabilitating the abusive parents does nothing for the child. The parents only accept the rehabilitation to be kept from going to jail.I wonder what the agency think of themselves and hiw they sleep so well at night? I say this, the mother of this child is more guilty than the man; even though she didn’t kill him herself, (well “maybe” she didn’t kill him herself), its her baby she pushed him out, she was suppose to kill anyone who harmed him. and she didn’t she sat by and watched it happen and even stood behind the animal, backing him on some of the abuse charges. And the family members who are now talking about this- should be held accountable as well; they needed to shit or get off the bowl and they didn’t, too late now so shut the hell up and get ready to live with the guilt of knowing you could have saved this poor childs life. Ewww people get me so sick they harm children and then act as if their sorry, gimme a fregging break the only one who’s sorry is me for not being wonder woman and flying down on every child who’s harmed picking them up and flying off to a land called paradise where no child is ever hurt or harmed and in my perfect world chld killers and molester would never be free to hurt again (:-)
