They are so underwater on that mortgage (owe more than the house is worth) that they are hoping to get rid of it so they can move into something more affordable. They've taken a second mortgage (maybe more) when the housing market was inflated and now couldn't sell the place for anything close to what they owe so I don't think I feel sorry for them.
