This DVD set, Poldark Series 1, as seen on Masterpiece Theatre as a wildly popular hit show, is making its debut on DVD which street dates on March 2, 2010. The New York Times describes it as “Romantic adventure, complete with raging ambition, terrible betrayals, frustrated loves, daring deeds, and a marvelously dashing hero.”

Poldark has been labeled as the British version of Gone With The Wind. It is based on the novels by Winston Graham while it demonstrates the enduring appeal of a gripping storyline and unforgettable characters. Series 1 brings you 16 episodes in a 4-volume boxed set with a running time totaled to about 821 minutes.

In this series we find when Captain Ross Poldark (played by Robin Ellis) returns home to Cornwall after the American Revolution, he finds his home life has fallen apart. His father has died, his properties are being threatened to be confiscated by corrupted businessmen and his house is all in a mess and he finds his former girlfriend Elizabeth (played by Jill Townsend) is engaged to his cousin. His family’s copper mines have become targets for the Poldark’s bitter rivals. Ross struggles through duels, smuggling and even attempted murders as he strives to regain his fortunes and to find true love.

We can easily be put under a spell as it dramatizes the deep rifts in British society on the brink of industrialization, played out against the rocky, ruggedly beautiful Cornish Coast. Starring along with Robin Ellis and Jill Townsend we have Angharad Rees playing Demelza, Ralph Bates playing George Warleggan, Clive Francis playing Poldark’s, Francis and Norma Streader as Verity both being Ross’s cousins.

If you are a fan of Gone With The Wind then I think you would enjoy Poldark, Series 1. You can get your copy by clicking on the Amazon icon at the top of this page with the cover art.
