You completely misunderstand. Ratzinger was conducting his own sacrileges without Pope John Paul knowing. There is a lot Ratzinger did and to this day still does in secret.

Saint? The man who orchestrated - along with Ratzinger - the successful attempt to cover up the sex abuse scandal?

How on earth can ANYone who would not only do such a thing once, but maintain and reinforce it over years, be regarded as worthy even of being CONSIDERED for sainthood?

OH, yeah...his accomplice Benny is the one fast-tracking him to sainthood. What better way to validate Benny's own policies?

Re: taking up our crosses daily. Yes, we should be patient and kind, etc., in the face of our daily trials. That is not the same thing as mutilating our bodies for the sake of pain in some sick, misguided idea of what God wants from us. Jesus may have been flogged, but he never did any such thing to himself nor did he suggest anyone else should.

Carolin. These are Christ's words. "Anyone who wants to be a follower of mine must take up his cross daily and follow me". That to me means some form of sacrifices by forgoing some of our daily creature comforts, daily attempts to fight our personal self-serving habits and other denials done for the love of God. That to me is what Christ's is teaching us here. Any committed Catholic tries in their own personal ways to fulfil Christ's advice by accepting and embracing our little crosses daily for the love of Him as we strive to imitate His humility, His love for humanity and His mercy. "Be merciful as my Father in Heaven is Merciful".

I was raised a Catholic. Went to Catholic School and High School. Once I was on my own and began reading the Bible and really studying about the origins of many religious practices I realized that most of these self abuse activities were incorporated into the church from non-christian religions. Even the cross was pagan. To make a long story short Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law so that christians would not have to practice sacrifice, etc. to gain redemption. All a real christian has to do is obey God Almighty and remain faithful to his Son Jesus. Please think about this. No one can earn forgiveness. It's futile. That's why a perfect man had to pay the wages of sin for us.
