On January 14th a call was made to report little 2 year old Aveion Malik Lewis kidnapped. The child’s stepfather, Brandon Lockett, 24, told police three men entered a duplex apartment in the Southeast Roanoke area and kidnapped Aveion after they knocked him out leaving him unconscious. He claims they bound and restrained a 4 year old girl also before leaving. The men reportedly left a note demanding $10,000 for the boy’s return.
Lockett gave full description of each of the three men that he claims took his stepson even saying they drove off in a 1990 Chevrolet Blazer.
Aveion was described as being a black male with black hair (with a close cut) and brown eyes. He is about 2 ft tall. He was last seen wearing yellow Sponge Bob Squarepants pajamas.
Now police are saying that the kidnapping story is not true and the stepfather has admitted to authorities that the boy was dead before he even called the police.
Police claim that they became more concerned when Lockett and Aveion’s mother, Morgan Lockett were not very helpful during their investigation in trying to locate Aveion.
Police Chief Joe Gaskins told the Roanoke Times, “We had some reservations about the stories that were being told, but considering the child, we couldn’t afford to assume that an abduction had not occurred, so we certainly had to work it from the angle that there had been an abduction.â€
Investigators aren’t sure yet just how much Aveion’s mother is involved with this. Her brother, Chris Ward says she hasn’t reached out to her family for support during her son’s disappearance but he would think it would be more like she was scared of Lockett than she would have been involved. “I believe he has my sister scared to say something†he said.
Police have now charged Brandon Lockett with child neglect, improper disposal of a human body and obstruction of justice. The police are not releasing any other details as to how the child died. Other charges could be considered but the grand jury in February according to Roanoke Commonwealth’s Attorney Donald Caldwell.
It has been revealed that Lockett has a criminal record including a conviction in Georgia where he was guilty of striking the mother of his daughter, Janet Balkcom, with a candle holder in 2006. He plead guilty to family violence simple battery and was sentenced to one year probation and he was required to attend a family violence intervention program along with him having to pay a fine.
About a month later Lockett broke into Balkcom’s home and had a fight with a man and Balkcom called the police from a neighbor’s house. Lockett plead guilty to family violence trespassing and served 60 days in jail and continued to probation when he was released.
Brandon Lockett also is still on probation for possession of cocaine according to court documents.
Police have been searching for the 2 year old child with the help of more than 60 volunteers as they use horses and cadaver dogs along the banks of the Roanoke River, the wooded area near where the child lived in the Jamestown Place duplex and they also searched in an industrial area.
They have looked under tarps, and even through trash piles that are in the area. They just want to find this baby.
Roanoke police Capt. Curtis Davis said that the police are continuing on this case even in inclement weather, which freezing rain is expected for today. “Until we find him, we’re going to continue working this case as much as we possibly can,†he said.
Davis is a firm believer that there are people out there that do have some information or that know how they can get information that could help lead them to finding little Aveion’s body. He urges them to please call the police at 853-2212 or (800) 822-4453 if they have anything that can help them.
This child needs to be found. As sad as it is if the boy is really dead now, he still deserves to be found and given a proper funeral at least. Please help me keep this child in our prayers as we continue praying for all the other missing, abused or murdered children as well including Adji Desir, Haleigh Cummings, Hassani Campbell, Masaraha Ross (who remains missing with her Mom) and Marc Anthony Bookal. These children are still gone and no one knows where they are… or do they? Someone knows but they just aren’t talking. I pray that one day they will gain a conscience and start talking. God Bless these children. They are our future and without them there will be no future.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThis is truely sad. I hope someone will come forward and tell where this baby boy is . He deserves a proper burial. May God bless him and let justice be rendered to the max.
Thank you for letting us know, Jan.
I agree, looking for justice.
I’m so disgusted with the way “family violence” is handled (rather, mis-handled) in this country.
Jan wrote about the step-father: “. . .he was guilty of striking the mother of his daughter, Janet Balkcom, with a candle holder in 2006. I don’t think ONE family vilence intervention program is enough nevermind a fine. When someone behaves that way they need a psych eval and constant close monitoring. In that situation he hit an adult but who knows that it will stop there? If anyone harms a child they should be prevented from ever being near a child again IMO.
m2c good to see you. I couldn’t agree more.
i am so sorry for aveion, i hope they find him.
i will keep him in my prayers.
Ok I have to wonder what in the world are these women who’s children are dead or missing by the hands of their partners thinking, will it hurt or help to run a full criminal back ground check on the people we allow in to our lives especially when we’re raising children? Its open season on children in this world today so its more than ok if we don’t trust ANYONE around our children until they have been thoroughly investigated. Even the partner we chose to be the parents of our children need to be throughly investigated family abuse is serious. Will they be good partners let alone good parents? This is ridiculous and children don’t have a chance when the parents or step parents are the boogy man/woman. Most children who are harmed now-a-day’s are harmed because of careless adults. We are really screwed up in this world and children are the victims what a sad story.
This is why it is so important to carefully choose the people we bring in to our lives carefully. As adults just because a person may be a good “lay” or may look good on the outside says nothing about their mental being. We choose people today knowing its open season on children and without doing any background checks on them we allow these people into our home just to find out their horrible partners and even worst parents to our children. With the missing/death of so many children by the hands of the people we allow in our lives should be a good reason for us to never trust anyone man/woman/teacher/priest/rabbi/imam/or friends around our children without doing a thorough background check. If we did this it would be less murders and disappearance of our children. What a darn shame.
Jan, thank you for the update. I am so sorry to have been right on this one:( His story just didn’t make any sense. I hope they kill him & the mother if she knew and hid it. Don’t give me any “scared of him “BS! All she had to do was tip off LE and she would have been safe IMMEDIATELY!!!
The trash that needs to be taken out isn’t just the baby killers, it’s also the people would lay down with them and still love them when they’ve hurt their child. THat to me is just as sickening as the killers, the men/women who lust & love them. Arrggg…..I think I’m gonna be sick.
I am fearing that the stepfather may have done something unthinkable .He could have struck him and it killed him as the stepfather has a violent history and drug convictions. At first I thought the child possibly ingested narcotics but now I fear he may have been even sicker than I thought possible,I pray this boys body is found in one piece.I wonder what day trash is collected in that area and if landfills are being searched, the police probably thought about that but that man had ample time to have done anything with his body.I dont believe for 1 second that the Mother would be scared like the above person mentioned all the Mother would have to do is tell the police she was scared.I know woman that put up with abuse but I doubt she would stay quiet in fear because the man is far behind bars.People who worked with this woman said she had problems like depression over aggresive behavior/hostility and seemed mentally unstable.I still believe the mother had something to do with the planning and carrying out of this childs murder by her staying silent she seems guilty as hell.I think she should be put in jail and charged and then wait and see ..she would probaly start talking then! This is so sad and disgusting. The video of her being all loving and friendly holding the baby looks like a show.Im thinking there is more to the womans mental instability to do with this.I pray he is found. The father had plenty of “clients” because it was known that he was a drug dealer .Whos to say he didnt bury his body in one of their yards?God rest his soul. His body still remains unfound but God is cradling him in heaven.
I wonder if the police have thought of corresponding fires in and around the area of the time or before or after the time of dissapearance of his little body because most killers believe that burning evidence of a body is the best way to go.I pray not but it all makes me wonder.
Sad news a child’s body was just found in trash, believe to be little aveion, trash was from area where aveion lived, another little one gone when is it going to stop?
I along with most everyone else would like to know if the stepdad told the police Aveion was dead then why in the H didn’t he tell them where his body was. That makes no sense, that man is sorry and I don’t mean for what he did.
The justice systems in the US definately do not take child and domestic volience as serious as they should. I dealt with DV for years and the courts simply don’t punish the act of violence as serious as they should. I feel so bad for that innocent child. I certainly hope the little girl is put somewhere safe so she will never have to be the subject of such violence or death. I hope they give him the death sentence, and it’s pretty guarantee they won’t put him in population because most of us know whay inmates do to child molestors or child murderers. This is a fact…just remember what goes around comes around…bad karma…etc…he will get his just…
God Bless Aveion and everyone that tried to save him…keep trying to save the children someone has to look out for them.
