My fear is that using the sedia would send an unintended reactionary message - that it would drive people away from the Church rather than draw them to it. JPII managed - with difficulty - to get by without being carried aloft, and B16 has done so as well. Both ably emphasized the pope's connection with the People of God. Better security will protect the pope, and an infirm pope slumped in a sedia and held high will help nobody.</description>
