Just want to add that I have recently been reading up on this subject and have found that Maya scholars Linda Schele and David Freidel's interpretation apparently disagrees with E.J. Clark's interpretation.
(You can find their studied opinions on the interwub via google.)

As I said before, I am not well schooled on this subject, yet, when I think about it I am forced to consider the actual value of the various interpretations.

Would be interesting to watch the various "experts" during a debate on this subject though...Just saying.

2012 is not a hoax and should be taken seriously. Roland Emmerich's 2012 movie pretty much depicts what is to happen only the cause of the cataclysm in the movie is wrong. The Maya were not the only ones who knew about 2012 as most of the ancient world did from 3,000 BC up till the late 1800's when the knowledge was lost. Washington DC was laid out to reflect 2012 as a reminder to visitors. Monuments carved in stone were left worldwide to warn our generation of 2012. Christ taught it in the Bible but few today have understood it. The ancient world, on both sides of the continents understood 2012 very well; the modern world however is stumbling in the dark for answers.
The ancient world, including the Maya, believed our planet(water) is a co-dimensional planet that has a spiritual counterpart(fire). These 2 planets (fire and water)united during the flood of Noah which occurred on the Spirit Earth. The spiritual creation fell through time and dimensions during the flood of Noah and united with this planet; that is why it is called the Fall. The true Earth or original creation is the Spirit Earth. At the end of the age or Great Year on Dec. 21, 2012, the ancient world and the ancient Maya believed that the 2 planets will separate. The Spirit Earth, true Earth or original creation will ascend into the 4th heaven, universe, or dimension along with the living righteous people. The Maya ended their long count calendar on that date because where the true Earth has gone, time is measured differently and there will no longer be a need for it. So it is the end of the Earth, the true Earth or original creation in this universe. Many terms were used by the ancients to describe the event such as: the
change, the transdimensional change, the renewal of Earth, translation of Earth, the ascension of Earth, the Harvest, etc. The modern world coined it the "rapture" of not only righteous people but of the planet itself. It is the separation of the wheat and the tares spoken of in the Bible by a process called a pre-tribulation translation or "rapture." Do not be misled, it is not the second coming of Christ as that occurs after tribulation. It was meant for us to know as Christ taught it. He called it the Day of the Lord's Wrath. The Hopi call it the Day of Purification, to the Aztecs, Maya, and Toltecs, it was the Day of Retribuation. The ancient world and Maya also believed that it was the time of the first resurrection of the righteous dead.

Those left behind on the physical planet Earth will face a cataclysm, then tribulation. For the last 5, 125 years the sun's path has been advancing steadily toward the vaginal opening of the "dark rift" of the Milky Way each time it crosses the galactic equator until on Dec. 21, 2012, when the sun crosses the exact middle of the Galactic Equator, the sun will be in the vaginal opening of the "dark rift." This is the Sign of the Suntelia when it happens. The Maya referred to it as when the sun rises out of the mouth of the Oruroboros. When this sign is given, it marks the end of the Precession of 26,000 years rounded off or Great year which calculates in the Gregorian calendar to Dec. 21, 2012, and the end of the age of Pises. Many cycles of time end on that date. When the sign is given, the 2 worlds will separate. The physical Earth will then be positioned to start a 3 day cataclysmic transit through the "dark rift" of the Milky Way in total darkness because the dark rift is filled with dark non-luminous clouds through which Earth will pass. It is what lurks in the "dark rift" that causes the cataclysm. The "dark rift" contains the electromagnetic axis of the supermassive black hole that sits in the center of our galaxy. Although the black hole is 24,000 light years away from Earth, because of its tremendous
size, the energy flows down the axis like it was only a couple of blocks away. Earth also has an electromagnetic force field surrounding it. When the 2 force fields collide, it will cause a cataclysm. Earth will make a transit through this magnetic axis which will cause it to shake (the great shaking of the Earth mentioned in the Bible) which will cause tectonic plate movement and tsunamis...all in total darkness. Revelation says that only one-third of the Earth's population will survive. According to the ancients, this is the 5th and last time the Earth will make this transit.
For the complete and full story, read the non-fiction 2012 trilogy, The Ark of Millions of Years, by E. J. Clark, the most comprehensive 2012 books in the world. E. J. Clark is an Mayan expert. Thanks....

How very interesting to look at the issue in such a way in that it was possibly a passing down of a myth. (I've read also about things such as the "Strings theory" although I must admit in all my embarrassment that I still just don't "get it".)
I think it is natural to always look for reasonable, explainable, concrete solutions.
It makes sense.
What does not make sense in my opinion is that spirituality is often overlooked as a potential and likely source and explanation.
Why is that?
People pray to our Creator but some and maybe even many automatically think of it as supernatural occurance if they actually were to receive some form of answer in return?
In a day and age when scientists can easily track a person's DNA back generations and through the centuries yet still are ignoring the fact that a man's (or Woman's) tie can pass and never be gone?
For those of us who are spiritual this hypothetical "alleged" discovery might seem as insulting in nature but in reality it is simply a normal human behavior.
Fear is also a normal human behavior.
I am no one to question the Mayan calender or beliefs. I am not Mayan and I honestly do not know that much about it or them.
What comes to mind when I hear or read about this belief is the interpretation(s) of the prophesied/predicted “2012 Event".
What does it really mean?

Great article to peruse. Wado.
