I have to admit that I do not class myself as an expert in the world of web site creation. My bag is content. It does not matter to me if it is News, Reviews, Interviews, or whatever, content is the thing! Content is King! If you read sites by people like Google’s Matt Cutts he emphasizes the fact that while SEO  (Search Engine Optimization) is an important tool, by far the biggest aspect is content. There are many that wear Black Hats, trying to fool the google algorithm, White Hats, trying to work within the rules (a little known area), and various shades of Gray Hat’s that vacillate between the extremes.

I own no hats. I don’t even own a baseball cap! I just write stuff. I spent a delightful (joking) three days aquiring a web name, a place to host it, and a platform to handle the whole process. It took little effort to find those three weapons, there are more register sites and hosting solutions than there are snowflakes in the world!

The next desicion involved software platform, I wanted something that mostly handled the day to day issues, I was certainly not prepared to fight with FrontPage, or any of the other web development tools. I was looking blog, something that can be changed and updated, added to, with minimum fuss. At the low end is Google’s Blogger product, it is cheap and cheerful, and pretty much works like a champ for the individual that just wants to publish an online diary.

At the other end of the blogging spectrum is Movable Type, this is the caddilac of the blogging world, and in my opinion it is best used if you have a PhD in Astrophysics to assist you. Somewhere in the middle is WordPress. It was WordPress that I selected, it offered the greatest ‘bang for my buck.’ It was also the platform that I know best from a users perspective.

Installation was a snap, actually I selected a host provider that offered WordPress as a one click install, so I was not expecting much of a battle.

Then things started to get a lot more interesting, selecting a ‘theme’, and configuring the beast. This turned out to be a major and time consuming  task. Two days later it sort of looked and worked the way I had planned it.

As an added and unexpected bonus I must have done something right or at least got lucky Google picked up the site within two days. I have heard stories of people waiting months for that blessed event.

But, I discovered one show stopping problem, and have been tearing my hair out over it. Google is not picking up the correct text excerpt, rather than picking up text from the articles it is using the calendar on my left sidebar.

Rather than getting something like this from a Google search:

This is hardly useful information!

Not being one to give up easily I decided to see if I could find some friendly help on the internet. Not being sure if the issue lay with Google, WordPress, or even the Atahualpa Theme that I was using I decided to try all three sources. I reasoned that someone would take one look at the problem and tell my the stupid mistake I had made. This has not been the case, The Google gurus (not the company, rather the external ‘experts’) looked down upon me from on high, I guess these people do not like to associate themselves with new guys!

I received an equal amount of not useful help from the WordPress and Atahualpa folks.

Pretty much if I was just a regular guy, I’d be in a pile of hurt right now. But, I know that this is a simple fix, so I am hoping that someone reading this article will get in touch and help me out.
