Mother, brother, sister, aunt, uncle…it doesn’t matter. If you know where that child is tell LE what you know. What kind of life is it for a child to constantly be on the run? To never be able to go out in public? Do you think the child will be happy to never see his mother again? I don’t and futhur more I think the child will probably not want anything to do with the people who have kept him from his mother when he gets older if not found soon. If they are out there on that boat then that child could very well be in danger, and that’s a big if because I don’t think somebody with no expereince would put there childs life in danger like that. What if the dad falls asleep and the child jumped or fell off the boat? If the father put the child on a boat it shows that he is only thinking of himself and not at all about the child.

As far as what everyone else is saying and how you don’t like it and think they have no rights to, here are my thoughts on that. My opinion only.

If actors, actresses, and singers don’t want their life thrown all over the media, then they should have chosen a different profession and if criminals didn’t want they’er life thrown all over the media, then they should never have done the crime. Reguardless of what happened before the kidnapping the man has now committed a true crime by kidnapping the child.

Stop being selfish…Think about the child and his safety, if you do he will respect you for that later in his life.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The search continues for a missing 3-year-old Palm Bay boy. Police in Cocoa say witnesses reported seeing Paul Martikainen and his 3-year-old son, Luke Finch, get in a 32-foot sailboat at a
St. Petersburg marina on Saturday.

On Monday the boy’s mother, Christa Finch, appeared in front of media cameras Monday holding up pictures of her son 3-year old son Luke, and his favorite stuffed animal. She says the boys father, 35-year old Paul martikainen, didn’t bring him back from a court supervised visit Saturday night, and her intuition tells her he needs his mom. “I’m sure that he’s telling him he wants to come home to Mom. I’m sure that he is.”

Christa last saw her son at the Cocoa Police Department, where she handed over the three year old to her ex-husband. During a visit to a Cocoa Park, the Palm Bay father allegedly slipped away from supervision. The two were next spotted at this Saint Petersburg marina, getting onboard a sailboat which left the harbor. “He’s probably scared… he’s never been on a boat in the water, and I’m sure he’s very scared,” said Christa.

The department of children and families tells FOX 35 they have confirmed reports of child abuse by the father several times in 2009, but wouldn’t specify how many. Martikainen is allowed supervised visits, but not overnight.
The boy’s mother, Christa, has sole custody after the couple divorced four years ago.

I knew Paul in high school (Lake Worth High Palm Beach County Florida) and he was a toolbag then. He had a real hot temper and was arrogant as Hell. He was not a good person then, and obviously is not a good person now. He got shot in the stomach in 1993 by his former roommate. They need to start checking out his family and see if he tried to get to them.

I am so so worried about the little boy because of the father’s lack of sailing experience. I wonder if they guy is smart enough to have planned a bluff - like plan to be seen rowing out to the sailboat and sailing away. But a report mentioned that the sailboat was towing a skiff. So what he could do is go somewhere, get in the skiff, scuttle the sail boat, and use the skiff to get to shore. That way all eyes are looking for them at sea while he’s doubled back and is on land. In which case he’d need a car possibly or maybe he could get along somehow without one. Just a thought that I am hanging on to because I’m so afraid of them being at sea.

REM - Many of us do not pass judgement without knowing all the facts. I am personally aware of how the family court system can crucify men. I’m glad you are posting because although I don’t know who you are, I believe you do know Paul personally, and it is reassuring to hear from those who know him that they do not feel he would harm Luke. If you have any contact with Paul, I would just hope that you convince him to return to safety with Luke. I’m not passing any judgements - I just want both to be safe.

you know what-you all can lick those flames yourself. i’m not defending WHAT he did. I’m defending his relationship to his SON. And you can bring up what ever your heart desires. If you don’t know him then you can’t imply what was going through his head. I DO NOT condone the taking of a child for any reason. but i can say that i know he loves his child. He already lost one to a Drunk Driver. I’m sure he just didn’t want to lose another child. And shame on everyone who can be so judgemental of me or him. And while you are pointing those fingers why not announce who you really are while you do it instead of hiding behind screen names?? I’m done. If you did then you would know better. If you want to take up for that side of the family then that’s fine but don’t go making s— up. all of you can come up with your own versions of this story if you want to. there’s nothing i could say to change your mind if you already have him judged.May the flames of hell lick all of your feet that are so quick to judge someone. really. i never believed people could be so judgemental when they don’t have a clue. And yes i’ve seen them behind closed doors. And i can tell you what he did was stupid(kidnapping) but he would not hurt that child. And has never hurt that child. i wouldn’t defend him if i for one second thought that may be true. Martikainen has an arrest record that includes driving without a license and failing to go to court multiple times in the 1990s. In 1999 he was arrested in Palm Beach on a felony charge of trafficking Ecstasy.

In February he was charged with child abuse and domestic battery.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is joining the search for a Cocoa man accused this weekend of abducting his 3-year-old son during a court-supervised visit, then setting sail on a friend’s boat off a St. Petersburg marina.
Cocoa Police Department spokeswoman Barbara Matthews said the FBI is preparing an “Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution” warrant for 35-year-old Paul Martikainen.

Witnesses who saw Martikainen and son Luke Finch on the news Saturday night called police and reported they had seen them take a dinghy out to a 32-foot Bristol sailboat at about 4 p.m. at a St. Petersburg marina, Cocoa police said.

Police in Cocoa said Saturday that Martikainen disappeared with his son from a supervised visit in a Cocoa park.

St. Petersburg police responded to the Salt Creek Marine Center and found Martikainen’s green 1995 Ford Explorer.

In a statement issued Monday, Matthews said police are seeking a warrant to search the vehicle.

The U.S. Coast Guard is broadcasting an announcement each hour on the marine emergency channel, while authorities attempt to locate the vessel, which witnesses reportedly saw towing a skiff behind it, police said.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will disseminate flyers tonight in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area.

Investigators determined that one of Martikainen’s friends bought the sailboat in October and the vessel remains unregistered. The boat was recently painted battleship gray, possibly to conceal identifying numbers and to camouflage the craft while underway, Cocoa Police spokeswoman Barbara Matthews said.

Martikainen has no known extensive boating experience, Matthews said. “We’re not sure he has a destination in mind,” she said. “We don’t know where he’s going, where he’s taking the child. He’s certainly not an experienced sailor, which is a concern.”

Cocoa detectives are working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies to find the boat.

“It’s a huge search area,” Matthews said. “That area is absolutely flooded with boats that are now winter residents.”

A court-appointed supervisor monitored the pair because of the father’s history of alleged abuse against the child, police said. But they slipped away undetected.

“I don’t know what the circumstances were,” Matthews said.

“The concern is that he’s not supposed to have the child,” she said. “His visitation is supposed to be supervised, so yes, we are concerned.

To My experience,
I hear of things like this, but don’t see those breakups turning lethal or criminal. It is sad to see that some people don’t realize a good thing when they have it.

Unfortunately, working with victims of dv, what is seen there is terrified women and children who are often threatened by saying if they leave, that the abuser will make sure she doesn’t get to see her kids. These same abusers will also then claim to be falsely accused. They will even say to the victim that if they tell, then the abuser will say that she is lying and no one will believe her.

This goes on EVERY DAY. It is rampant in FL.

So, while I am sure what you are saying can and does happen. You won’t see this advocate condoning leaving out of boredom. What I am talking about are people who file for divorce who complain of domestic violence and/or child abuse.

And the nonsense of the claims being raised when filing for divorce doesn’t make sense to call them false, because it is the maltreatment that is the reason for splitting up. This false allegation crap doesn’t fly. It is terrible for the victims to go to court. They are treated awful. They get questioned over and over. Anything they don’t remember correctly is claimed to be a lie, when in fact all people’s memories fail from time to time and the stress that occurs from abuse incidents makes it difficult to remember minute details when being victiously interrogated with the specific intention of confusing the victim. They are especially horrible to children.

If you think that the interrogators are falsely making children agree with abuse claims, it is quite the opposite. Most kids are afraid to tell. Many investigators who don’t want to help anyway will ask leading questions suggesting good parenting by both parents, etc. Then they close the case saying they couldn’t corroborate. Absent horrific injuries, emotional abuse, keeping kids locked up, hitting without leaving marks, choking but not killing, sexual abuse and more are being covered up with the help of unethical and incompetant people.

This has nothing to do with what you are saying. DV victims don’t leave because they are bored.
Also, DV victims are much more likley to be challenged for custody than in a marriage that breaks up for other reasons. The children in abusive relationships are much more likely to be abused than other children also. And very often DV victims lose custody because they cannot afford to keep fending off contempt charges and constant FALSE CLAIMS of withholding the child, or not making a call or other minutia that abusers like to inflict through the court system, not having enough parenting time, etc. The abusers love to make themselves out to be innocent victims of false allegations of abuse while inflicting huge amounts of emotional, legal, financial, and any other kind of harm they can get away with on the victims who are trying to start a new life free from abuse.

ST. PETERSBURG — A Palm Bay father who authorities say kidnapped his 3-year-old son and set out to sea in a camouflaged sailboat had no prior boating or sailing experience, according to boaters who say they know him.

Those who got to know 35-year-old Paul Martikainen were worried Monday morning as they tended to their boats at Salt Creek Marina in St. Petersburg. Witnesses at the marina said they saw Martikainen and the boy, Luke Finch, get into the 32-foot Bristol sailboat, according to Cocoa Beach Police.

Debra Van Skiver, who works for a towing company near the marina, said she sold the boat, a 1977 32-foot Bristol, to Martikainen for $6,109 during the third week of October. He told friends he was purchasing it for someone in Arkansas and would be transporting it after working on it, but Martikainen himself had no sailing experience.

He appeared to be living aboard the boat as he worked on it, said Ted Scaratt, whose boat was docked next to Martik’s.

He mentioned he would try sailing it after visiting his son over Thanksgiving, Van Skiver said, and she advised him to take some boating classes first.

“This is a man with not a lot of sailing experience,” Van Skiver said, noting that she has a child too. “It is impossible to take care of a child and sail a boat without multiple people.”

The boat was recently painted battleship gray, covering the identifying numbers and making the vessel difficult to find in the water. This led authorities to believe the abduction was planned, according to Cocoa Beach police spokeswoman Barbara Matthews.

Finch was reported missing Saturday afternoon after he disappeared from a Cocoa park during a visit with his father monitored by a court-appointed supervisor. Martikainen, 35, was able to slip away sometime after noon.

An Amber Alert sent out Saturday evening said Martikainen was thought to be traveling in a green 1995 Ford Explorer with tag number 142KEA. Shortly after news of the alert ran on local news broadcasts, a caller told authorities that the vehicle was at the marina, Matthews said.

People who got to know Martikainen at the marina described him as a nice, friendly guy who often brought doughnuts to share with other boaters.

Scaratt, Martikainen’s neighbor at the marina, said Martikainen has dual citizenship and said he once served in the military in Finland. “He never gave an indication that he was capable of this,” Scaratt said.

Van Skiver said the boat was seaworthy. It has a sleeping cabin, a kitchenette and standard safety equipment such as a compass and VHF radio. He recently purchased a GPS system before Thanksgiving, she said, but it has no EPIRB, a device that helps rescuers locate boats in distress.

The boat also had adult life vests but no child vests, and Van Skiver didn’t know if Martikainen bought one.

The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting the Cocoa Beach police in the search for the father and son, thought to be in danger. The Coast Guard is broadcasting an alert about Martikainen on a marine emergency channel, the Orlando Sentinel reported

Martikainen was ordered to have supervised visitation because of previous allegations of abuse against the boy, Matthews said.

Matthews said the child’s mother is “afraid … but very hopeful.” The mother or other relatives of the boy could not be reached.

I don’t see anything other than traffic or divorce on the mother. Maybe the dad is retaliating against the mom by falsely claiming abuse. It sure looks like than from the way he kidnapped the child.

FYI-There are nothing but innocent men wrongfully accused according to the Men’s Rights guys.

Have never seen any of them ever admit to inflicting emotional, physical or sexual harm that led to the victim crying out for help.
Then they re-victimize the victims by calling them liars.

It’s atrocious.

Although everyone has their opinion, I know for a fact that this parent should not be in the presence of his son. AND have you noticed the fathers mother has not posted since last night. I think she knows exactly what he’s doing since she admitted “he plotted” this kidnapping. I think there is much “aiding and abetting” going on but the most important thing is to get this child back home with his mother and family where he will not be frightened. This little boy has to be scared to death. This man will have to pay his dues when he is caught and might never see his son again….oh well…he should have followed the rules of supervised visitation. He is not the poster child of a loving sane father.

I’ve been reading the blogs and just have to add my opinion. Of course, there are always two sides to the story. The father should have continued with the supervised visits to see his son and be a part of his son’s life (though minimal right now). The court would probably review the visitation rights on a periodic basis. But most importantly, there will be a time that Luke will be able to make his own decision on having a relationship with his father. Anyone helping in the kidnapping, should be arrested and charges should be filed. I pray that Luke is returned safely to his mother. I can’t imagine the trauma that Luke has been put through, he is the innocent here. He needs to be returned home safely. Not only is his physical life at risk being out in the ocean with an unskilled sailor, but what about his emotional state of mind? If you are reading these blogs and you know where he is, for his sake, bring him home.

You are right. The family court system is a mess. It doesn’t manage to protect kids most of the time it seems. Here’s an example of the court trying to protect the child and failing again.

IMO if this father - or any father - was innocent of the allegations and truly wanted to be with his child and wanted the best for his child then he would have gone along with it -supervised visits etc. Whatever the court wanted in order to prove himself. I know the system stinks but better the father “pay that price” (which costs what? patience?) than the child pay the price of living on the run and possibly…well I don’t want to mention the worst possibility.

The REAL criminal here is the family court system for not allowing a father to see his kid or only being able to see him supervised (just as bad).

I don’t know anyone involved here but when I hear that a father was falsely accused of abuse, it doesn’t surprise me - it happens all the time.

I don’t see this father as a “criminal” - I see him as a guy who loved his child so much that he was willing to risk everything to be with him.

I have personal experience with this sort of situation and I think that the policies of the court system invite this sort of “blowback”

I’m glad to hear that the father planned this thing out before he took off and I hope all goes well for them - I hope that they are safe in the Bahamas right now.

I think that the owner of this website should take screen shots of this website and send it to the Cocoa, Fl Police, or wherever the boy disappeared from, to let them know that the kidnapper’s mother might be posting on the internet and could possibly be aware of where her son is heading.

I think he is goingto head North along the coastline. Try Jacksonville FL, South Carolina, North Carolina, ect. They will have to come to port for food and supplies, or to relocate. I do not believe, without exstenive sailing knowledge, he will try to sail out into open ocean waters (as in sailing to another country.)
He likely won’t be trying to round the peninsula or sail to Mexico. I say the FBI should arrest the person who bought the boat as an accesssorie to the fact, charge them with kidnapping charges, get them to squak! NOW! Do it now! Don’t wait, don’t let him have a further head start. Someone needs to figure out just what exactly was on the boat (via boat owner & painter), how much a similar boat could safely carry, then determine how long they could stay out to sea before comming ashore. Once we know how long before re-supply time we can narow down his route. I’ll start…everyone jump in.

While we do not have any rules about using the same name in here when posting a comment, we ask for no one to use the same name because we have always as a courtesy to our posters of trying not to have two people using the same one that are regulars in here.

I have noticed two people using the name Justice. While I can tell the difference not everyone else can so as a courtesy to the original Justice and the rest I am asking that the second Justice please use a different name in here so the two of you can be identified as the one you are. It gets confusing in here with two different people posting under the same name on a regular basis.

I could suggest the second Justice to become Justice2 perhaps so that way everyone will know you are not the original poster using Justice.

Well, if the allegations were false and all the father wanted to do was be a part of his son’s life, then all he had to do was participate appropriately in the supervised visits and stand up to the allegations by behaving in a way that helped to disprove them.

Instead he kidnapped his own son. Wanting “to have fair time in his son’s life” does not equate to kidnapping which means staying on the run constantly and providing a miserable life for himself and more importantly for his child. Unfortunately, if he was guilty of nothing before he sure as heck is now. He just did the worst possible thing he could do.
He’s just proven that all he’s thinking about is himself- not his son.

He’s ruined any chance he had of seeing his son again except from behind bars IF anyone would even take the child to see him (which sounds unlikely).

Personally I am worried that the father will go overboard and think “if I can’t have him (all the time) then no one will” and that’s when tragedy strikes. It happens. I truly hope LE finds the boy safe and sound very very soon.

Unless you personally know this family, which I do, who are you to rebuke the mom. The main issue here is to get Luke back to the family that he knows and takes excellent care of him on a daily basis. This man is dangerous, abusive and doesn’t deserve the right to see his son as he has just proved by his behavior. No matter what one is going through you don’t take a 3 year old little child from his mother, the father is NOT looking out for the welfare of this child he is selfish, self centered and hopefully his parental rights will be taken away.

BTW…What is Luke’s mother’s first name? I didn’t see it mentioned in the articles I have read. I’m assuming that FInch is her last name. Why didn’t she give Luke his father’s last name at birth? Just curious. Was it an effort to sabatoge his parental rights? Was there a DNA test to prove his paternal rights? Was child support ordered? If not, why not? For his benefit or hers? Her benefit would be the right to refuse him visitation until DNA was established, child support ordered, judge declared. This is a very common tactic used by females to keep thier ex’s away from the children, with or without alleged abuse(s).

I know first hand of what you speak. I have helped my brother raise his 2 boys since 5 & 7, also a step-child, no blood relation from 9-17. Thier mother was the vendictive type and had she not done prision time for her own misdeeds, she would have made my bro’s life a living h#ll. Well, a lot of the time she did. She made both of our lives h@ll, including the kids. She never really cared about what they wanted or needed, just her own agenda. Now, my daughter is having problems with her baby-daddy. Since they broke up and she started dating someone new, he and his family have been causing problems, making false allegations, and hiring expensive attorneys. It can go eith way, here in the Sunshine State. It’s been labelled as the “Mommy State” but I know first hand that Father’s do stand a chance, they just have to do what it takes to keep ahead. Kidnapping the child does not qualify. Why didn’t he apply for legal aid? One can not use a Public Defender for civil cases. His was, since the crimminal charges against him were dropped. If he had very little money, he should have qualified. Yes, sometimes it takes time to get things straight, but it’s not impossible. I wonder if he knew that in this state, that if a custodial parent refuses the absentee parent visitation or thier legal rights, when taken to court for the third time that the absentee parent can be awarded full and total custody? Yes, it takes some time and some money, but it can be done. Thee are laws already in place that would protect him, as much a her. Her allegations of abuses have to be founded in evidence. There has to be some type of proof involved, not just her say so. Maybe that is why the charges were dropped. No real proof. That doesn’t explain why he still had Supervised Visitation. Once the charges were dropped against him, that should have ended. What was the reason he was given as to why it wasn’t closed out? There are reasons….What does DCFS say about it? Are you a blood relative? Have you known him for more than a couple of years? Have you been behind thier closed doors? Do you really know what he might have done when there were no witnesses? Just asking….

The 1 thing she forgot to think about is, He’s in the Army, They’ve been in different states and he can’t go anywhere without the Army knowing about it and now they are in Iraq, and she’s still claiming stuff. But maybe fear of not getting to see him at all in the future for whatever the next hoop she chose to throw out there scared him. Up to this point he did everything the court asked of him and even what she asked of him. this is really a more sad story than people realize..he couldn’t afford a lawyer. he fought all his court battles representing himself. not an easy feat when you are fighting a highly paid and educated lawyer.

It’s not easy being judged by a world of people who have no idea what you’ve been through. He did everything the court asked of him. He NEVER hurt that child. Luke and his father, Paul Martikainen had been spotted today at a marina in St. Pete. Martikainen’s SUV was found there. They were seen getting into a 32′ Bristol sailboat and leaving the marina. This boat is owned by a friend of Martikainen’s and it was recently painted battleship gray, the hardest color to see in the ocean. Martikainen does not have any boating experience.

Strange comment on an informative item straight from court records.

There are many people who use the name Justice.

Apparently someone out there is concerned that the very real failures of the court system shouldn’t be exposed?

The guy plotted and planned a kidnapping and took off with the child on a boat according to the latest reports.

There should be MORE outrage, not covering up for incompetance by the justice system.

Police: Dad and abducted son set sail
FLORIDA TODAY • November 29, 2009

Investigators believe a Palm Bay father abducted his 3-year-old son from a Cocoa park Saturday afternoon, drove to a St. Petersburg marina, boarded a sailboat and fled to an unknown location.

Witnesses who saw Paul Martikainen, 36, and son Luke Finch on the news Saturday night called police and reported they had seen the duo board a 32-foot Bristol sailboat and leave the marina, Cocoa police spokeswoman Barbara Matthews said.

Police responded to the marina and found Martikainen’s green 1995 Ford Explorer, according to a press release.

Investigators determined that one of Martikainen’s friends bought the sailboat in October, and the vessel remains unregistered. Moreover, the boat was recently painted battleship gray, Matthews said — possibly to conceal identifying numbers and to camouflage the craft on the ocean.

Martikainen has no known extensive boating experience, Matthews said. Cocoa detectives are working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies to locate the boat.

Martikainen took Finch from Riverfront Park in Cocoa during a court-scheduled visitation, police said. A court-appointed supervisor monitored the pair because of the father’s history of alleged abuse against the child, according to a news release — but they slipped away undetected.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cocoa Police Department at 639-7620 and press “4.”

Our Children are Our Future. We need to protect them.

The system needs a makeover badly.

I hope this child is found quickly and is safely returned to his mother.

If you live in Florida please please please watch for this child and do whatever it takes to get him back to his mother.

Women and children all over Florida face this same failure to receive protection.

What needs to be done is that the people who are failing to protect women and children and subjecting them to ongoing re-victimization need to be hald accountable for their failures.

Florida is notorious for minimizing women’s claims of maltreatment and forcing children to have ongoing contact with “allegedly” abusive fathers.
