A large number of veterans that have served the country have been exposed to the deadly carcinogenic asbestos according to a recent report from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The department claims that hundred of thousands of veterans have been exposed to the substance while serving their country.

Many of these veterans were exposed to asbestos while working on naval vessels. Asbestos was used as the main form of insultation in these vessels. Between the 1930s and the 1970s over three hundred products containing asbestos are said to have been used by the Navy and other sectors of the Military.

Asbestos was widely used in many industries until the late 1970s or early 1980s, and this is because it provided many benefits because it was cheap, heat resistant, highly durable, and offered a range of other benefits. However, the dangers of the substance, such as malignant mesothelioma, were not widely known until several decades ago.

Many people that worked in the military sectors including the Navy are said to have been routinely exposed to asbestos whilst going about their duties and most did not realize that it posed any sort of danger.
