I just received this op-ed piece from TJ Hart. I think he sums up the situation quite well – Simon
I just had to break up another stupid fight on my Twitter site today.
Once again, some in the blogosphere have appointed themselves God and are passing out their judgment on the parents of killed or missing children.
Diena Thompson’s lawyer said the family does not think Somer knew the person who kidnapped and killed her. Investigators said the 7-year-old Somer disappeared on her way home from school in Orange Park, Fla. The search came to a tearful conclusion when her body was discovered in a Georgia landfill days later.
Diena’s been doing a lot of interviews on national TV shows. Now she’s getting criticized by some people for it.
She’s getting hate mail and calls.
“I wonder what kind of person would attack me when I’m already down,” said Diena.
People are calling her a bad mom, among other things, for letting her kids walk home from school.
It is not much different than some of the nasty things some bloggers are saying about the Haleigh Cummings disappearance one county south in the town of Satsuma, FL.
Although there is plenty of suspicion and bizarre behavior to go around involving Haleigh’s family members, there are also those on the internet who as so hateful on all sides of this equation that one would think a civil war involving old ladies swinging purses is about to erupt.
OBSERVATIONS REGARDING THESE TYPES OF PARTICIPANTS:
·        Appear to have a distrust of police
·        Appear to hatred for men in general
·        Appear to revel in the shortcomings of any woman
·        Appear to have a strong need to find an alliance of like-minded opinion-makers
·        Most don’t even live in area—let alone in the state of Florida.
What has spawned this behavior as of late?
This reporter doesn’t know the answer, but he is very shocked at its existence.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackSimon & TJ, thank you both for exposing this. It is shameful the way Diena is being treated. I personally feel that Diena is doing everything she can to expose this killer for Somer as well as to keep him from making another victim.
The assumed anonymity of the web allows groups of like-minded hate-filled sub-humans to gather like a pack of rabid hyenas to rip into shreds any person they choose (for any reason, no reason and imagined reasons), then wait for the victim to twitch (another news item or rumor) and dive in to rip them apart again.
I hope when they look in the mirror that they see themselves as I see them – vicious monster heads with huge teeth bared by gaping blood smeared jaws, drawn wide for yet another attack. Such specimens just prove that not all “humans” are completely evolved – from the slimey ooze of their wild pre-historic predecessors.
Or, from a Christian point of view, some people are just plain down right evil. (And I’m not talking about the perpetrators of these crimes against children, but the hyenas that move in on the sad, grieving “remains” of their families.)
I’m so glad to see someone call it like it is — these “bloggers” that have nothing better to do than sit around a judge people in situations that they themselves have no idea what they’re talking about makes me sick! They need to get a life and stop trying to bring more pain to those already suffering from unspeakable loss. The hatred that spews from some of these people is beyond hurtful, and lacks the good judgment that they are accusing people they don’t even know of not having.
Hello everybody,
I have been not been on that much the last few days. I was shocked at what was being stated about Diena Thompson when I came on to check what has been happening. I find this very shameful. Diena is experiencing the worst pain a loving parent could ever endure. Diena now has two other children she has to be there for. She is dealing with their grief as well as her own. I believe she will be a strong advocate for other children and families that have experienced what she is going through. People need to stop causing more grief for this loving mother who does not want her daughter Somer to have died in vain. Diena wants justice more than all of us here. We can only imagine her nightmare; she lives it. Find some compassion and lend support for Somers mother.
In the Haleigh case I do feel people can be harsh towards them. I believe this is because people really feel that Haleighs family are not doing enough to search for her. People feel that they just want to go on with their own lives and be done with it. They just cannot understand the demeanor of all involved in Haleighs enviroment.
I have to believe that LE knows who they are that is involved in Haleighs disappearance and that they will find a way to bring them to justice. Yes, I believe it is close to home and I will continue to have faith that justice will be served in both Haleighs and Somers cases.
We also need to remember Shaniya Davis from Fayetville, NC. The boyfriend has been arrested and the mother is giving inconsistent statements. They still have not found Shaniya yet.
looking for justice, I agree with you but wanted to say that Diena has 3 living children. She has Somers twin brother, the 10 year old sister that was walking home with them and a 13 year old. Because there were 2 siblings walking home with Somer the media hasn’t mentioned much about the 13 year old.
Thank you T.J., finally a voice of reason. People have not appointed themselves God, they think they are God. Hate mail to this mother is beyond disgusting. People you are “Flirtin with Disaster.”
Thank you Treece. I was not aware of the 13 year old.
My heart breaks for Diena, I don’t know how anyone can attack her, that poor woman.
Must say I am very surprised & appalled people are calling or writing Diena with such comments. Regarding the players in the Haleigh case, come on after following 9 months of antics & watching interviews…does someone not have opinions or thoughts on this case? That would be a too much to ask of an intelligent person. I have seen people get very hostile though & you have to scratch your head & wonder why they take a difference of opinion so personally (like the person’s opinion really matters in the scheme of the case) lol.
TJ regarding your observations:
- “Distrust of police” I agree & think that is mostly coming from lack of information, conflicting or ambiguous statements.
- I am not seeing the “hatred of men in general.”
- Agree with “appear to revel in the shortcomings of any woman” and that makes me sick when I see it.
- I think it is human nature to like people who agree with your opinion, or gravitate to like minded people, however a healthy debate is more thought provoking and can come up with the better answers.
- Most don’t even live in area—let alone in the state of Florida. OK GMAB on this one TJ, people who care about missing children do not care where they live. Also stats alone would no doubt show there are more people following this case that live outside of FL than inside due to population alone. So I need my pocketbook to wrap you on that one LOL.
Honestly, I wonder why these cases get so heated? But, I haven’t observed this as new. I have followed many missing children’s cases over the years & the Jon Benoit & Madeleine McCann cases were just as explosively-heated! I have wondered the psychology about this for a number of years but I have no answers. I just hope it is because people care deeply about these children. It seems not everyone has learned the simple concept; agree to disagree.
Thanks TJ for your thought provoking comments.
I think alot of people are scared, you cant lock your children in the house or yard. Its almost reversed you end up treating the children like criminals and the criminals have more freedom to wonder the streets preying on our kids…something must change to give our children more freedom to just be kids.I am 50 and I remember the good old days of walking anywhere without a care in the world. My children didnt get that option even tho we live in a very small town. I told them bad people can be any where a car, bus or train can take them. People are cruel even to each other, they need to ask themselves how would I feel if it were my child. Also never believe that it cant happen to you it can…
Somer was in the wrong place at the wrong time. How could anyone possibly fault Diena?
Now we have another missing 5 year old, this time in NC, and drugs are, once again, a major part of the parent’s lifestyle.
Are there more predators now, or are we just more aware of the problem because of advances in communication technology?
People seem to be frustrated with LE. That, I believe, may have something to do with the CSI Effect. People watch realistic crime dramas like Law & Order and CSI and are aware of the forensic technology but fail to grasp that DNA analysis doesn’t happen in an hour.
Give LE a break.
polly, you are absolutely right. wrong place wrong time. Somers mother did, and is doing everything correctly. how can anyone say how they would behave in this situation. I think if we are to take a lesson from this, it should be from this sad mother. Her tears are very real, (unlike casey and misty) her sad is hard to deny….my heart and prayers go out to her and her family.
We all come to every situation with past pains and hurts they become reignited when we see or hear something that reminds us of that very tiring time. We lash out at others from the pains of our own. We need to look in our selves when we want to find fault in others.
People cannot judge others until they have walked every step in their shoes.
We just had a scare here in our County, A child was grabbed and they tried to force her into their car, she got away. Our county has called an emergency meeting of all city council and county chairpersons to meet, They want to enact, Guardian Angels task Force to help protect our children.
This is information that I sent to the Sheriff:
Dear Sheriff,
In September 15, 2009 I had given information to a friend of mind, Jinah Kim, who works for NBC at Los Angeles about the person who had killed the girl at Yale University. I wrote his name was A. C., because of my stroke I had in 1997 and had lost 20% brain my name I had was Andrew Colin. On that night on NBC they had his name Albert Clark. So my A. C. was correct but I had a problem with my brain and I had Andrew Colin.
Yesterday I gave my information to Jinah Kim that the person that killed Somer Thompson at Orange Park, Florida, his name is P. H.. Out of my brain it came out Paul Hagerman. Please just notice that his name is P. H. Check it out.
Your friend, Richard
The problems happen very much around the World has nothing to do with God. It is the person that is in charge with the World for 9 more years. His name is Satan. When you see what happened at Fort Hood, Texas. One person killed 13 people and thought he would die. That is Satan item. When you see in Iraq and around it, some person comes in kills 50 people and what happens to him? He is killed at the same time. That is Satan item. Look in the Bible at Genesis 3:4 and notice Satan said: You positively will not die. What happened to Adam & Eve, they are dead.
That person that killed Somer Thompson his name is P. H., find him.
Richard
WOW, TJ I think your drinking koolaid today.
Somebody sure is!
richard, for gods sake, if you know something please go to the sheriff…don’t just write a letter… if your just blowin’ smoke then maybe you are satin…as this is a horrible thing to do. You need to do something NOW!
Maybe the koolaid is spiked.
Polly, thats my thinking too!!
I think I’ll stick to coffee and energy drinks.
I’m sure LE gets lots of letters like Richards and I have no idea what they’re supposed to do with that kind of “information.” It’s pretty near useless really. If they run into a suspect with those initials LE would still have to find the usual kind of evidence. Initials aren’t enough. Nice of you to try to help, though, Richard. Your heart’s in the right place and working 100%!
To: “It’s 5:00 somewhere” @12:35 – You don’t agree with TJ’s article? That the hatred is uncalled for and the attacks are awful? If so may I ask what you are spking your koolaid with?
m2c, was not attacking no one,I have no hatred in me.
Was there not an attempt made to snatch a child in Jax a week or 2 before Somer got grabbed? I believe it happened near a school.
People can be so cold hearted to those of missing children or those that were killed. Put yourself in Somer’s mom shoes and tell me how you would have reacted to what happen. You cant cause you have never gone through a loss of a child, a missing child.. Get a darn life and stop putting this mother down she is doing all she can do and there was nothing she could have done that could have change the fact. All the things she could have or should have done would stick with her the rest of her life dont you think she feels bad enough. She is just like all the other single moms, there are alot of them that has child or children that are key latch kids. Cause there is only one parent in the home. She has to work to support her children. So stop giving this woman hell leave her alone and let her be.
Has for Haleigh I just wish someone would come forward and speak to say where this precious child is. I have my opionons on this case and Iam just going to leave it to that.
God please bring peace and comforting to SOmer’s mom please let all this ugly people put her down for something that wasnt in her control at all. Please bring whom ever done this to this precious child to an end and justice can be taken in.
God please bring closure to the Haleigh case that someone will come forward and this precious child is found.
Anybody see this,
http://www.thesky973.com/pages/5672004.php
Sorry, 5 o ‘clock. I didn’t understand your post.
Yes, Polly. I believe there was a report that someone tried to snatch a child a week before Somer disappeared but I think the people in the car contacted police and explained that they thought the child needed help and all was smoothed over. (Am I mistaken, folks?)
The only flaw – to me – in TJ’s article was the line about “old ladies swinging purses.”
I’ve seen some of those sites and read some of those hateful comments all over the net and – going on what some of them have said about themselves – not all of them are “ladies” OR old. They’re men and women of all ages. What they do have in common is a need to spew hate.
When we all read dont we take the text in different context. Cuz we all think and see into things differnt.I suppose he gets tried of all the bull. I do!
I had no idea this was going on.. So sorry that people are going to this extent.
5 o’clock! Yes, we often get the wrong impression about a poster so we really should try not to assume. But that’s hard.
TJ may have gotten his impression from the number of female callers to the BNN radio show. But I’ve seen other blog sites where there were men bashing different people in this case (including Ron) as well as all ages of women.
One name comes to mind to describe these vial sociopaths who use the Internet to attack victims and the innocent: Missed abortions.
m2c, do you have a link to that? I’d appreciate it.
Polly, you mean a link to the report about the possible attempted kidnapping the week before Somer was taken?
Polly, if that is the report you mean I’ve looked and can’t find it. It should have been in one of the early reports before she was found.
Remember people were talking about an incident nearby the week before? But later I’m sure I saw mention that those people in the car had gone to police to explain what happened so LE wouldn’t be on a wild goose chase. I’ll keep trying to remember where/when I saw it.
The reported attempted kidnapping of a child was proven to be a mistake. There was no kidnapping attempt. The woman, who is spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said in an interview, that was a misunderstanding. She didn’t want anymore reports about that, because that was taking up their time.
thank you simon for this article. i agree t.j. has summed up the situation very well.
i am not going to comment on the sickos that send hate mail to grieving parents. i wish someone would screen diena’s mail and calls for her. how much can a parent take. and she still has to function as a mother to her other children, her other grieving children.
i know various aspects of haleigh’s family are pushing our own personal buttons as well as our hearts for the various people involved. t.j., i hope your reminder to keep this all in perspective will help. this is about haleigh first.
this case has been going on for so long now, maybe, it is just natural that some of us are taking things to personal. we should stop it, or it will ruin the blog. some are talking about finding a way to start over from the beginning, finding facts to post, and taking a fresh look.
i want to thank t.j. for the work you are doing on the haleigh case. you have been consistently dedicated, thankfully professional and managed to that while having a big giant heart. and, as for today’s op-ed, someone needed to say it. i respect so much the way you have gone about all of this. ms.p.
I think it’s disgusting that Diena is getting hate mail and calls. You can tell from her interviews that she is truly grieving. Since I’ve started following these cases there is no way that I would let my children walk to school if there was any way I could avoid it, but some people have to work and have no choice but to let their kids walk to and from school. There is no way she could have known that Somer would run ahead of her siblings, and get snatched and murdered. It is sad that the world is getting to the point that your child is at risk of getting kidnapped and murdered if you let them out of your sight for even a few seconds.
Hey Estes, you sure it’s not 80% of you brain that is gone?
Phillip Harper: That’s not nice. And is it coincidence or a sick joke that YOUR name has the same initials that Estes says Somer’s killer has? I don’t usually pay any attention to paranormal carp but maybe this time we should?
Innocent until proven guilty, I say. That includes us little old ladies carrying purses. I guess we could stick our money in our bra.
I think all the should ofs and should haves, should find away and keep their selves busy, by making it safe for the Kids to walk home from School, parents are working, everyone doesn’t have the luxury of car pooling etc. Why shouldn’t they be able to walk home with their Sister or Brother or both..sitting on here trying to find fault with the Mom serves no purpose what so ever,Somer walked this walk twice a day everyday, until that day, so tell me,who was waiting, they wouldn’t have even known that she had a spat with her walking mates..So who was ready, the more upsetting thing to me, is Somer would go different places on her way home, so did she this day..I’m sure they are trying to find this out and not waste to much time on that empty house, keep it on the plate, but look where she would stop and visit also…
Although there is plenty of suspicion and bizarre behavior to go around involving Haleigh’s family members, there are also those on the internet who as so hateful on all sides of this equation that one would think a civil war involving old ladies swinging purses is about to erupt.”

I am glad TJ is aware of the hate, and hopefully will help lead ppl in a more impartial direction. I do believe the media has a big hand in the hate fest that has plagued many cases, like the mentioned Cummings, and now Thompson case. Shoddy, reporting needs to stop! Journalism needs to be done with more reponsibility. Some media appear to even plant the seed, where they will run with unfounded allegations to stir the pot! Its time for the ppl to demand better. Un many cases, these victim’s families, are victimes too. In the cases mentioned, we have certainly not had enough/any evidence that proves guilt, or certainly not enough..Many ppl who cud be in their showes, cud easily live an unethical lfe, but in no way, does that make them killers/kidnappers. I am hoping that many ppl reading TJ’s article, will stop and think about how their negative opinion, helps spread hate. This in not the answer. It seems that this “hate”that is aired from the peanut gallery, over and over, has helped facilitate poor judgment and negatively influenced ppl, like TM who felt it was ok, to to wasted donars money, by setting up a sting operation where he has only interferred, if anything. Im not justifying his poor judgment, I am merley trying to show that the peanut gallery is influential, and should try and remain impartial, where there is no known evidence suggesting otherwise.
God Bless Somer, and Haleigh and their families…and please help bring Shaniya home!
Why would anyone attack Denna, Sommer should of been safe walking with her siblings. Unfortnaute she left there side and this awful thing happened. People complain when a Mother collects welfare and sits on her butt. This Mother was doing the best she could to provicd for her children she held down a job. I say do something to change the Law’s, it is a sad day in this world that children are not even safe walking home. Maybe bus service needs to be provided no matter how close a child live to there school.
Stop the abuse and murder of the children in the U.S.

Shaniya’s Mom sold her, now this is a sad day for all. I pray they find her safe and before someone used her for sex this is sick.

hello pat,
thank you pat for the comments you made above.
(Pat said,in November 15th, 2009 at 12:58 pm)
boy, you really said it all!! i wish i could copy your whole post and add my name to it.
about changing the laws, i started to collect some information for myself to learn the facts. i hope to share what i find with people i know. (kind of a personal op-ed to share with families and friends.) i hope to try to have basic facts and maybe some suggestions about what i think we all can do. and i want to ask everyone else i talk to if they have any ideas on how to change the laws. if we put our heads together it is going to happen. the point is sooner rather than later.
thank you again for what you said above. ms. p.
pat,
i don’t know if you saw these other articles. mostly the same info.

in the examiner article.
“It is suspected that she knowingly provided her daughter to Mario Andrette McNeill in exchange for drugs or cash.” i really hope that they are wrong about that.
this last article also says, shaniya was with her mom only three weeks.
boy, i hope there is a way to find her soon. people need to tell what they know.

I hope you take the time to sign the petition, I am a grandma of 12 and love children as do my sons. I want all children to be safe and loved. But something has to be done as far as our laws, children service and the Judges are not doing a good enough job. Children are living in conditions that are not safe. To many time if they are removed they are sent back to unsafe conditions, then something happens and it is to late then. We all need to ban together and change the Law’s.

This is another sad day Simon, they found little Shiniya. I can think of only one punishment for all the people involved, and I will give you one guess of what that is!!!!
The assumed anonymity of the web allows groups of like-minded hate-filled sub-humans to gather like a pack of rabid hyenas to rip into shreds any person they choose (for any reason, no reason and imagined reasons), then wait for the victim to twitch (another news item or rumor) and dive in to rip
mc2…You attacked me for hate…when I have none. You are the one you are writing about.
It’s really horrible that anyone would be so mentally unbalanced and go so far as to send hate mail and calls to Diena. It’s also not fair to label anyone who has questioned a few things as rabid men haters and whatever. To be fair, it was said that Somer did lag behind the other kids at other times. The poor child was only in school a short time so it’s not like she was a seasoned walker. Diena did live with a man who worked, she worked, so it might have been possible to get the child into after school care or pay another mom to provide after school care for extra money. Somer was not safe as possible if it’s true that she had a habit of going off alone. No child is that does this. That’s all that some people have said, and it’s not hatred of Diena, men, cops, society, or anything else.
Tara,
I dont necessarily think its flet with hate, as a writer may write such a statement about in this case Diena…
I think it wud be an expected proper assumption that this womens baby was taken from her in such a heinous way, that she will never have inner peace again…
While ppl will write things like ….
” Somer was not safe as possible if it’s true that she had a habit of going off alone. No child is that does this. That’s all that some people have said, and it’s not hatred of Diena, men, cops, society, or anything else.”
It is indicative of callousness… wud you actually be able to utter these words to this mother who is broken, in pain? These words imply thats she didnt care ” enough” …. Is that really fair? just sayin…
