Two global corporate giants are facing having to pay out nearly half a million GBP between them in relation to asbestos related lawsuits. The two companies are the world’s biggest food company, Nestle, and the global energy giant Esso.

Esso has already been ordered to pay three hundred thousand GBP to a woman who lost her husband to mesothelioma, which is a form of cancer linked to exposure to asbestos dust and fibers. Her late husband worked at an oil refinery in Hampshire and contracted the cancer later in life.

The food company Nestle is now facing a similar action with the daughter of a worker who also died from the asbestos related cancer seeking one hundred and fifty thousand GBP in compensation. Experts believe that this could be the first of a series of claims relating to asbestos exposure.

In the meantime industry groups are still waiting on the government to reach a decision with regards to compensation for sufferers of pleural plaques, with one official stating: “We will be reminding the Government and indeed, the country, of those people who have contracted pleural plaques. It affects thousands of people throughout the UK. We want to put pressure on the Government to reach a conclusion. A decision needs to be made and it needs to be made quickly.”
