Interesting article. Fascinating how the whole world has the same problem -- but not surprising. There is an opportunity in Jamaica, now, to make a "Fresh Start" nationally, taking many of the things you mention into account. We may or may not make constructive use of the opportunity. But it is comforting to know that even as the Mystery of Righteousness and the Mystery of Iniquity contend -- and the wheat and the tares grow together until the harvest -- the Eternal Creator, Yahweh Elohim Yahshua, is still in charge, still ruling in the affairs of men, still working out his purpose, pattern and plan.

I have authored a book titled "Responsibility, Usefulness and Graciousness" in which the existence of not only the God of the western society,in the mainstream religion is validated, but that those too that are worshipped in other societies - the muslims, the hindus etc,. If we were created by the "big bang" and not God, can we answer where did the big bang come from ? !. It is the ultimate not-knowingness of mankind that leads us to God, the transcendental and imponderable spirit of the universe. When we arrive in the world, every man and woman after Adam and Eve inherited and became beneficiaries of man's endeavour living together in a human society as it came from God. We owe man a debt ot gratitude for our living together which enables us our humanity which enables further the recognition of God. So to and in society it is not rights first, but responsibility. We have been pursuing our lives in the context and frame of rights rather than that of responsibility. Read my book further on the matter. Find it on "amazon.com - Responsibility, Usefulness and Graciousness". It helps to provide the balance that we must have to correct the dysfunctionalities that exists these days in our society - societies.

The beauty of the monotheistic religions (and also Hinduism) is that they link ethics and morality with the will of the deity.

But since the PC are bent on destroying Christianity, you can find morality outside of religion: Confucius and Plato, for example insist that a good life is a happy life, and insist on self control not hedonism

Excellant article Mr Meekins. I haven't seen such a detailed piece on the moral decay of not just the US but the planet as a whole in quite a while. The first paragraph alone shows how far out our priorities have become in the mere fact that it is true.

When you write, "...readers not normally enchanted by the banter of academic dialogue may concede that morality does indeed flow from God," you shoot your argument in the foot.

Let me translate your proposition: "If you don't want to bother using your brain to question the idiocy of the existence of an imaginary character, then default to belief in that imaginary character so that you don't have to take responsibility for your own good."
