Thanks for your terrific comments Marianne. I really enjoyed doing the research on Burlesque and visited Burlesque Babes Shop often-- not just for the Hope Diamond info but for all the other fascinating material. Thanks also for your words about "outing" Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini as Hope Diamond. I went back and forth about doing so. Her age gave me pause. But I'd gotten to know April Daye through my digging re Hope Diamond and the story about April was stronger with the Hope lead-in and the contrast between their characters. Plus, Leona was a public servant who allegedly betrayed the public trust. Age didn't stop her from subverting the democratic process via bribery.
Allegedly.

Great to hear that a Burlesque-themed movie is in the works. I've also heard that Jimmy Breslin is thinking of writing a book about Hudson County political corruption. Breslin wrote "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight", a novel supposedly based on the life of mobster Crazy Joe Gallo. A book about Hudson County's pols might be tagged "The Gang That Couldn't Govern Straight".

Thanks again-- I heart classic Burlesque!

Carola -- Excellent article! I am so glad that you found more corroborating facts and info tidbits about Leona. It's a crazy story.

I had written about the comments posted on that bicycling forum, but after a few days, I was asked by "Anonymous", the self-proclaimed relative of Leona, to take the comments off my blog. I obliged, but I am glad you wrote them in your article - thanks!

I can't imagine that her past being "outed" will cause Leona much concern - she's got bigger problems now. Besides, there's no such thing as bad publicity - this makes her more intersting - maybe there's a movie in her story, too. There's a Burlesque film currently in the works (with Cher) that might pave the path for more flix on the topic.

Thanks, too, for the reference and link to my Burlesque Babes Blog. The Burlesque world is fascinating, and I enjoy sharing the history and pix that I have. It's an interesting part of entertainment history, as well as an influence on our society & culture that deserves to be remembered. I am glad that you have taken an interest, and written this great entertaining article.

April Daye's story is fun, too. It's great to hear Burlesque tales from one of the gals who lived it.

Again - thanks for all! And I checked out your Mondo QT site - cool!
