Well another week in the land of social networking. I tell you what, this is quite an adventure as I meet new people daily and read all sorts of news out there. I am always a hound for anything on Peer Abuse and the “B†word. So, it was no shock when I stumbled upon this article from my news feed on Facebook that was somewhat disturbing.
This week, it was brought to our attention that someone had developed a poll on Facebook asking if President Obama should be killed. The options were yes, maybe, only if he cuts my healthcare and no. It appears that this created quite a stir and Facebook had removed the poll completely. Also, the developer had received a call from the Secret Service concerning this issue. These are big guys who take these sort of things very seriously and for good reason! The author of the poll is a completely different individual who has yet to come forward publicly.
Um, what is wrong with this picture? Is there anything that is right with creating something such as this? I understand that in the past and today that Presidents have gotten and probably get death threats on a daily basis. John F. Kennedy was assassinated and Ronald Reagan was shot. However, it appears as if this sort of thing is going viral and stuff such as this poll is just adding fuel to an already Presidential inferno. Why do we as a society continue to tolerate behavior such as this? Why do we keep going online and keep threatening to harm others? Cyberbullying is growing worse; not better. Whether someone likes Obama or not, he is the President of this nation and we as citizens need to respect him. What good is it to have a poll which discusses taking his life? I consider this a form of cyberbullying and I find no humor in this whatsoever. Fortunately, Obama has a lot of protection and help against these sort of things. What about regular citizens? Children? They do not have this and no laws exist to protect them. Not in all 50 states anyway.
Please, if you see any polls such as this online about anyone, please report it to the website where it exists. It is not about ratting out, agreeing with or liking someone but about threatening to take the life of someone else. This is by far a form of cyberbullying not to mention that murder is against the law. I hope the Secret Service talked to these individuals about the seriousness of this. In the meantime, speak up and do something. It only takes one person to make a difference. Please, let that person be you!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackAll those years ago when parents groups and others decried the trend towrd ore and more extreme violence in the media and other forms of entertainment public apathy allowed this trend to go unchecked. It seems that using viiolence, hate and anger for entertainment is a slippery slope where the ante must be continually increased for the same emotional and monetary outcomes. In other words, people become callous to it and in order to get the same level of attention and devotion/sponsorship, the level and perversion must be continually increased.
How can we expect people to use comon sense and be empathetic towards each other when we are constantly being bombarded by hostility, torment, violence and hatred in the media and our forms of entertainment. This presents a certain approval of tis behavior and subliminally if not overtly suggests that it is normal and that we all must tolerate it, expect it and live with it.
Bullying in all its forms, whether in person or cyber bullying have become escalated because it is not nearly as shocking to some as it would have been in years gone by, it doe not shake our sensiblities because we are so numbed by the violence and hatred we see all the time and BECAUSE NO ONE STOPS IT!!!!
Who knows the impact this “Poll” could have on some unstable person. Who knows how it will suggest to our children that this kind of thing is harmless (it is exciting, isn’t it in some perverted sort of way?)
I am amazed that so many still don’t get it and that it is in fact getting worse!
Judy, you are preaching to the choir with me but chances are someone will see this and not have the education we have on this subject. What you have to say will help. I back it up in spades……thats the scary thing….what if someone who is unstable got ahold of this poll? It could have gotten way out of hand. Am glad Facebook stepped up and removed it and the proper channels were reached in nipping this.
E, There was a disturbing article in the ‘Intelligence Report’ published by the Southern Poverty Law Center that identifies the resurgence of militia groups. They refer to themselves as ‘patriot’ groups although, by every stretch of the imagination, they’re no such thing. The crazies are moving into the mainstream, it could get interesting. This past weekend, I saw Fox commentator Glenn Beck for the first time, I’d never heard of him. He was bloviating about health care and comparing President Obama to various dictators and fascists and throwing in ‘socialism’ and ‘government control’ anywhere he could. This is dangerous speech considering the mental state of some of these nutcakes. One thing afforded by the First Amendment is that some of these crazies can’t keep their mouths shut and therefore can be identified and/or located and watched.
Glenn Beck does not hide behind anonymity. He has shed light on much this new President would like to keep hidden. He would never back a dangerous poll such as was in facebook. I hope Glenn keeps up the good work.
That is a very disturbing article but here is a shocking fact people who do polls like that prob didnt even vote news flash the majority of americans voted for him so get over it he is human he will make mistakes but people who want to hurt other people should be arrested makes no since y they just got a call and thats it
Beck does nothing but run his pie hole. I haven’t heard him say anything that I haven’t heard elsewhere. If you believe Beck is such a muckraker perhaps you should change the channel once in a while.
