In the UK, as well as in many other countries around the world, many schools that were built prior to the 1980s were constructed with the use of asbestos materials. Asbestos, which we now know is a potentially deadly carcinogenic, was widely used in construction of both residential and public buildings at that time.

It has now been reported that a wave of new asbestos related lawsuits could be sparked in the UK after it was revealed that a forty nine year old woman has entered into a legal battle with a local authority as a result of asbestos exposure when she was at school as a child.

Dianne Willmore has now been diagnosed with the asbestos cancer mesothelioma as a result of this exposure to asbestos, and is looking to sue Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council for nearly a quarter of a million pounds.

Officials are now concerned that many other people that attended schools in the 1960s could have been exposed to asbestos, and could potentially be harbouring the cancer, which simply may not have manifested yet due to its long latency period.
