Chris

Excellent contribution - thank you. I am a bit of a cynic on CSR - See:

among other pieces on the subject. But if a corporation commits to a CSR policy then they have to revolutionise the way they manage things. Few do.

While this was breaking last week, I was at the Frankfurt Motor Show as the guest of Renault, who were keen to let the world know about their new electric car range. Very groundbreaking, very good leadership stuff.

It's well known within F1 circles that Renault's CEO Carlos Ghosn couldn't stand Flavio Briatore and had made several attempts to oust him on the quiet.

Briatore didn't sit with Ghosn's managerial style ... and you can read as much or as little ethics into this as you like.

This sad little tale shows one truth above all others: if you an acquisitive corporation you are likely to buy bad apples as well as good and, occasionally, those bad apples will rise to the top of the barrel.

That's not to defend Renault: the F1 team was theirs, they owned it. But just as ethical consumerism is proving to be much more complicated that many first thought (hmmm, organic, fairtrade or local, national chain or local store?) so CSR is showing there are many fundemental practices in the business world which need to be fully rethought before CSR can start to gain proper traction.
