The folks at Discovery and I often do not see eye to eye. I loved this series, and for three weeks put up previews, then, in a move that made no sense whatsoever they removed access to the preview screeners. Pissed to the max, I had to watch the show at the same time as everyone else. It is pretty damn hard to put up a preview article under these circumstances. It was by sure chance that I stumbled into the screening room today. The final episode of The Colony airs tonight, and guess what? They actually had it for us press folks!
The Colony is not reality TV, in fact there is a rider that runs at the beginning of each episode. It is a controlled experiment. Take 10 people and throw them together, the background is that some awful natural, or more likely human engineered disaster was to happen, how would the survivors fare?

Unlike the stupid ‘Survivor’ model so often emulated by TV, the poor folks in The Colony can not win Kentucky Fried Chicken for winning the weekly challenge, what they have is what they have!
Episode 10 which airs tonight is an interesting one. And one that gives food for thought. Even though the people know at the bottom of their hearts that this is just a contrived experiment in human nature, they have become so involved that sense goes out of the window.
I am not a huge fan of Sci-Fi, but I have to admit that the concept of how I would survive in a ‘post apocalyptic’ world is one that I have given thought to.
I will not spoil the final episode, but I will say this. The brainiacs kind of sorta did ok, but the real people that kept the group together were the Handymen, two guys who could do everything.
Oh, and there is a serious injury tonight……..

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI thought the ending was very weak..
I think the really over done the attack it looked so far fetched.
I mean the car blew up with the flame thower in just 2 seconds and who is really going to get caught in nets.. I was really let down.
But hey life will go on right….
I have to disagree. I think the ending was simply that, an ending. I would be very curious to know the “results” of this experiment. I hope a host of post-experiment documentaries are conducted. It would be very interesting to see these people transition/assimilate back into society.
This documentary highlights MANY psychological challenges that present-day service members experience when they deploy. I know this, because I’m working on my 15th year in service with the Air Force, and have witnessed/experienced first-hand the environmental challenges to the psyche that occurs when in an a 13-hour span of time, your world as you know is suddenly very new to you and surreal.
Again, now that the season is done, I hope it will not fade into memory.
I want a second season!!!
A lot can happen on the way to another destination. A typical road trip, this is not.
I think this show was very good I can actually say I learn a couple stuff. They should have a second season with women only or tennagers
I think the ending should have at least showed them reaching their goal. I think a second season would be fun if they had a more diversified group such as a couple younger members as well as not having rocket scientists and stuff, more realistic situation.
I would like to know how they were able to close down the city where they were. I watched the show from the beginning to the end. I felt that they left too many things unanswered such as what happened to the doc that walked off, the goats, did they eat them or what and as far as what was up with that ending.
Tho i did not get to see the entire season i was lucky enought to catch the last several episodes up to and including the final episode.I thought the experiment was entertaining and informative. In our day and time this type of situation could very well become a reality.I learned some things that will definately stay with me from now on.I would like to see some type of post season episode with interviews of those used in the experiment and those behind the experiment. Not sure what direction they will go or if this it but i would be very interested in watching more show’s (or experiments) like this.
The trip could take up a second season even with some infrastructer I can see flash floods earthquakes with giant cravases and any number of trips to the junk yard as well as food and shelter foraging Why not a mad max type show or two.
Fantastic, long and very detailed article about this non reality sci fi show - well done!
Any news on Baby Aaliyah? I can see you’re busy but an update would be appreciated?
I don’t know if there needs to be a second season, but there at least ought to be a follow-up show where the participants can debrief and speak about the transition back into conventional society. The (lack of) ending was kind of unsatisfying because of this.
Regarding the doctor, my guess is that since he was on the program exactly one month, he was probably contracted to provide extra medical support and knew all along that he’d be leaving after a month.

I definitely think there needs to be a second season. I had such a blast to the system watching the first season, I can’t imagine a second. I’m thinking maybe a different colony? Joey and George… (spoilerspoilerspoilerspoiler). And Andre and Elizabeth… (spoilerspoilerspoilerspoiler). I’d be pretty flipping fantastic.
The ending was terrible

i’m just wondering guys……..there is no way if we survive the apocalypse and then build a new life just like the colony with each 10 people with skills……besides……..im confused when john cohn met his wife the wife seems happy to left the other group, she didnt even hesitate to leave her former group and when mike and vladimir scavenge for items in episode 8 phase 25 they look cute when they are trying to get away from the other survivor by just driving slowly like a scene from mr.bean where he stole someone transportation but its too slow…
This “show” has many flaws. As for the “science experiment” how is this possible when you have off camera professionals guiding the colonist how to build X gadget and director re-shooting scenes for entertainment value. Once they “colonist” break from character and start discussing the filming or building of a project, all scientific value is lost. I had a HUGE chuckle in the series finale when the marauders raided the colony home. Hollywood explosions, bad actors trying to raid. Even better during that same show the narrator discussed weight loss when surviving and during the the raid there was a over-weight person attacking the colonist. BTW what happened to the character that left the colonist by black SUV. I can hear screaming…. was that from joy or was she euthanized?
I want a second season. I agree with the person who said that many things can happen on their way to the other colony they had been informed of. I am really sorry that the medic (i dont remember his name) was left at the hospital (actually he was removed from the experiment). Well I just hope that there is a second season…..
