I enjoy watching very classic television show.  Don’t misunderstand me – I’m not a fan of old television.  Most of those shows really sucked, with only a couple of notable exceptions.  But it’s enjoyable to watch as a sociological experiment, to see just how much television, humor and entertainment have changed in the intervening years.  I happen to believe strongly in what Steven Johnson writes in Everything Bad Is Good For You that the evolving entertainment market is making is smarter.  Well, now you can check out a true classic from 1961 on DVD for the first time ever today!

Starting this September 8th, now available on DVD from Bagdasarian Productions and Paramount Studios Home Entertainment comes the first episode of a franchise that’s been with us for 48 years now.  The Very First Alvin Show is ready to come squealing out of your television screen and fill your living room with the ultimate classic adventure from the lives of your favorite chipmunks.  Bring home this timeless original today!

This DVD contains three episodes.  The first is, of course, the classic first episode ever broadcast of this show.  It was first aired in 1961 and has been stored on the original 35mm film until now.  It’s worth watching just to see the hilarious animation.  The second episode is “Rockin’ Through The Decades,” a musical episode hosted by none other than Will Smith.  The Chipmunks sing songs from the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson.  The third episode is “A Chipmunk Reunion,” a surprisingly heartfelt story that finds the Chipmunks searching for their long lost mother.

This DVD does not come with any special features, a fact which makes me immeasurably upset.  They went through the trouble to transfer this episode from the original 35mm film to DVD for the first time ever and they can’t even put in a commentary or a little featurette about that accomplishment?  That’s very disappointing, to say the least.

If you like to fashion yourself as a fan of this show, you can’t not bring home this DVD.  I enjoy those funny yet irritating animals, but I had no clue that they had been around so long.  For those of us who aren’t collectors or really old, the true gem on this DVD is the musical episode hosted by Will Smith.  It is hilarious and the songs they sing are some of the funniest things that have ever been done in the history of this franchise.  That might be hyperbole, but the point remains the same – it’s pretty funny.  With these three episodes, this show demonstrates why it will never really go all the way out of style.

Put this First on your list of what to do today!
