Congress will have new leadership in January as Democrats take control.
Nancy Pelosi will be the Speaker of the House and Harry Reid will be the Majority Leader in the Senate. On the Republican side, John Boehner will be House Minority Leader and Mitch McConnel will be Senate Minority Leader.
Democrat leaders talk about taking the country a new direction and Speaker-To-Be Pelosi has said that more embryonic stem cell research will be one of their top goals.
Democrats won key Senate races in Missouri, Maryland, New Jersey, and Ohio on this issue. Election night, the Senate balance was tipped in favor of the Dems in Missouri as pro-embryonic stem cell research advocate Claire McCaskill defeated incumbent Sen. Jim Talent with the help of a controversial ad by Michael J. Fox.
Many Democrats clouded the issue by attempting to represent Republicans as opposed to stem cell research in general, while Republicans failed to get the message out that they were in favor of adult stem cell research.
The debate will not go away as religious conservative, a potent political force, are fervently opposed to embryonic stem cell research which they believe, like abortion, is destroying a life.
