It is a rare day when we do not hear of a gun murder or suicide — and few of these are widely publicized. Of the liberal democracies to my knowledge only Switzerland allows citizens to possess weapons routinely and that tradition goes back centuries when it was devised to protect it from invasion.
Our NRA has garnered sufficient (paranoid) support to permit people to carry weapons of war, concealed weapons, etc. There are virtually no controls to prevent anyone from obtaining a deadly weapon without much effort.
I worry personally that some nut or extremist (of which we have organized groups) will attempt assassination of Obama. The hate campaign being directed against him now encourages such. Even our current Supreme Court seems to favor free gun access. The Second Amendment is ambiguous in its language and was devised at a time when citizens rather than a standing military provided our only national defense.
Personally I would like to see some victim or family of same bring charges against the NRA as a collaborator in murder. How much longer must we be haunted by this menace?
What do you think?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThe only one I see with a paranoid opinion here is yours. One of the first things communist do when taking over a country is to take away their guns. If your so adamant about taking guns away from people who want to protect themselves - why don’t you push for a law that outlaws drinking alcoholic beverages? There are more people who die from drunk drivers than you think. The problem here is you need to think!
Amen.
There is nothing remotely ambiguous about the wording of the second amendment taken in context with the clearly documented beliefs of the founders on the importance of self-defense and protection from tyranny, and a government that was accountable to the people. If you want more gun control, then repeal the second amendment. Until then, HANDS OFF.
Ed, if changes in gun control cannot be achieved on the basis of issues like: children killing themselves and each other with the family’s gun; teenagers killing themselves and each other with their own gun; lowering crime or reducing the number of gunshot victims during a crime; preventing drunk, drugged, mental and/or just plain depressed parents from killing their spouse, children and selves (in that order); then why in the heck do you think such legislation would be achieved on the basis of concern for our president’s life?
WHAT A STOOOOOOOPID Article!
Typical opinion from someone who obviously hasn’t looked at the govt’s own data which shows that more guns equals less crime. I guess he just reads the newspaper editorials from the NY Times on the subject.
i found your opinion crafted to follow every mindless propaganda booklet and speech. following your own supposed logic. do we have the ceo of ford up on charges when someone uses a car to commit murder? i can think of fifty more examples but we wil leave it at that.
how do you reconcile your description of switzerland with that of the united states? you state that “Of the liberal democracies to my knowledge only Switzerland allows citizens to possess weapons routinely and that tradition goes back centuries when it was devised to protect it from invasion. ” but we carry weapons of war concealed weapons etc…..what!!! where is the difference? they are following tradition and we are paraniod? did you ever stop to think (no) that your example supposedly to point out that that the swiss live a better life and are free from volonce is because they ALL have guns? one tends to be poilte when both parties are armed. look at japan. you cannot have a gun in japan…so they stab each other. look at england they have outlawed handguns for a long time and legislation is now pending to outlaw and kitchen knife over 4 inches long.
your logic is faulty and illconceived. stop to think before regurgitating someone elses predigested pap. for it is they who wish to control you.
i would like you please to read this and really think about it. if you disagree, fine but really think. view all the facts whith which you seem to base you fellings on with a jaundiced eye. where are they comming from where are they facts to back them up. do they want money from me? etc
“Weapons are the tools of power. In the hands of the state they can be the tools of decency or the tools of oppression, depending on the righteousness of that state. In the hands of criminals, they are the tools of evil. In the hands of the free and decent citizen, they should be the tools of liberty. Weapons compound man’s power to achieve whatever purpose he may have. They amplify the capacity of both the good man and the bad, and to exactly the same degree, having no will of their own. Thus, we must regard them as servants, not masters- and good servants to good men. Without them, man is diminished, and his opportunities to fulfill his destiny are lessened. An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.” jeff cooper
