I had heard of this movie, but I had never seen it until now.  I was never much of a big fan of dragons when I was a child and it’s certainly not an affectation I’ve picked up in the intervening period either.  But this movie is packed full of classic stars of children’s movies and other movies that I have seen.  Plus the whole animation and live action thing was never a tactic that took off, so it’s fun to see that every now and again.  Bring home this great movie on DVD today!

Starting this August 18th, now available on DVD comes the classic tale of a boy and his imaginary friend and how they come together to save the day.  Pete’s Dragon – High Flying Edition is ready to come scorching out of your television screen and bring a world of magical adventures into your living room.  Bring home this wonderful classic Disney tale today!

Pete is an orphan and he is all alone in this world.  All alone, that is, except for his best friend, an invisible dragon named Elliott.  One day, they stumble into the sleepy seaside village of Passamaquoddy.  Pete becomes friends with Nora, the woman in charge of the lighthouse, and her rough, old father.  Strange yet funny accidents begin to happen all over town, leading the townspeople to blame Pete.  No one believes him that it’s actually the invisible dragon, but that all starts to change once Pete and Elliot make a daring rescue.  This movie stars Helen Reddy, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons, Jim Backus, Jeff Conaway, Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney and Sean Marshall and was directed by Don Chaffey.

The special features included in this DVD are a look behind the scenes at how they managed this mix of live action and animation, a deleted storyboard sequence with a rare demo dialogue track, an original song concept, several original demo recordings of other songs, a promotion record of pop versions of some of the songs in the film and so much more.

This movie is vastly enjoyable.  The animation and live action is delightfully cheesy in a very heartwarming way.  All of the actors in this movie are great and this movie simply feels so very genuine and heartfelt, as though it knows that we are looking for some sort of deeper connection, even in our movies.  It’s a far cry from most children’s movies made today, but in a solidly enjoyable way.  Bring it home and you will know exactly what I mean.  Plus, all of the special features are a veritable treasure trove for fans of cinema detritus.  Bring it home today!

For Pete’s sake, you know you want this DVD.
