Almost a year after the bomber was released and, surprise, he's still alive. Looks like he's found a cure for both cancer and a life-sentence for mass murder. The trick? Have 'someone' pay off doctors to claim he had terminal cancer, then have BP make a deal with the UK government [BP receives a $20 billion drilling deal with Libya only days after the bomber is released]. Toss in a few corrupt judges and presto; he's not only free, but a year later he's apparently cancer-free as well. [insert colorful-expletive here]

m2c, in response to your question. "Is it customary in Scotland to let convicted mass murdering terrorists go if they are dying? Or any other kind of murderer?"

Since laws where enacted on the compassionate release of terminally ill prisoners there have been 20 applications and all of them have been approved.

This may be difficult for many in America to understand as your justice system is based on a system of retribution rather than protecting society. In Scotland the system is there for the protection for society and not to provide legal justification for private vengence.

The most striking example of this is America's continued love affair with capital punishment when most civilized societies have abandoned it.

Is it customary in Scotland to let convicted mass murdering terrorists go if they are dying? Or any other kind of murderer?

Even if it is typical, I would think this situation would require careful consideration of the consequences - which ended up being a "hero's welcome home" and once again stirring up political illwill against the West. The consequences affected the political position of Great Britain - which I don't think one man (drunk or sober) should be allowed to do.
This judge should be removed from office. His "judgement" is more than extremely poor.

The sober Scottish Lords who convicted Megrahi sat beneath the ancient Scottish motto “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit” - roughly translated as “Don’t meddle with me and expect to get away with it.”

Now, one stinking drunk and disorderly soccer yob Justice Minister tosses centuries of Scottish principle down the filthiest toilet in Edinburgh.
