Objection one: Most viruses and bacteria are killed by chlorine, luckily for us, because the main dangers, Herpes and Impetigo/MRSA, tend to be on the face or under the tiniest suit.
<a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B7GVY-4PNFB3M-1&_user=10&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&_docanchor=&view=c&_searchStrId=986293190&_rerunOrigin=google&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=b603beb5bb18cb46d6b42891ccab8dc1" rel="nofollow">link</a>

The main "epidemics" spread in pools are the enteroviruses and fecal bacteria...and of course various cold viruses, spread via the nose and fingers.

Two: The Burkini is designed so women don't dwown, in light polyester that doesn't absorb water (in conteast to tee shirts and ordinary shorts). If properly designed, they solve the problem.

I design and build swimming pools. I lecture on hygene and sanitation methods for swimming pools. It is not one of modesty that is the problem but one of hygene. It is recommended that the swimming costume should be enough to give a modest appearance but brief enough to see if the person has any skin condition that can be trasmitted to other bathers. If someone is covered completely and wearing a lot of cloth then
(1) you cannot see if they are carrying any transmissional condition.
(2) the clothing itself is prone to contamination and also has safety issues in that the weight when wet could drag the person down and it would make if very hard to swim properly.
In all I think it is a health and safety issue especially with regard to a health risk to other bathers.
