It has been reported that a rising number of medical specialists are using combination therapy for the treatment of the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma, which is a form of cancer linked to long term or high level exposure to asbestos dust and fibers. The cancer can take decades to develop, and at present there is no treatment for this disease.
However, the report claims that oncologists are increasingly turning to combination treatment, which is also known as multimodality therapy for the treatment of this form of cancer, having drawn on its success with other forms of malignant cancer.
With this method of treatment two or more different types of treatment are combined, and some of the combinations that may be used in this treatment include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, gene therapy, surgery, and immunotherapy.
The method and order in which the therapies are combined with this form of treatment can vary based on a number of factors, and this is something that is decided upon by individual medics or teams who are treating the mesothelioma patient.
