Oh anatomy lessons have been going on since time began. Maybe my favorite is a classic oil painting The Anatomy lesson of Dr. Tulp, a classic masterpiece painted in 1632 by Rembrandt. It may not be Rembrandt’s best known work, but in the art world, it is without peer.
I had the great privilege to preview a DVD series, Every Picture Tells A Story, The Anatomy Lesson Of Dr Tulp was one of the paintings subjected to scrutiny, I had really never considered the concept seriously before, but indeed, every picture does tell a story.
Rembrandt manages to capture an entire story in one seemingly strange painting. Truth and untruth are there to be found, one only needs to seek.
OK, I hear you ask, so what has this got to do with the untimely dispatch of Husein Shehada? Actually it has a great deal to do with it. We do not have a lovingly crafted oil painting, all we have is a somewhat grainy video from a surveillance camera. But, even this poor quality video reveals much if you take the time to look.
You can clearly see the two brothers come into frame, you can clearly see them halt when asked to do so, you can clearly see them turn as they are asked to. And you can clearly see that they are doing nothing threatening, yet a few seconds later Husein disappears from the frame, shot twice by Miami beach PD officer Adam Tavss.
While the grainy video showing Husein Shehada’s last moments may not have the artistic quality of Rembrandt’s Dr Tulp, it does share many other elements. What is happening outside the frame? Were there six other Miami Beach officers involved? Who are these people? Of course the ultimate question of all, who the hell thought it was a good idea to give Adam Tavss his gun and badge back after what is clearly a horrible crime? A scant 72 hours later, Tavss is playing Rambo again, and guess what, another one bites the dust!
I have looked at the video more times than I care to think about. I just keep coming back to the same conclusion, these brothers were doing nothing wrong. I see no threatening activity, I certainly do not see any weapons. I see two brothers being compliant with the authorities.
It is almost 400 years since Rembrandt awed the world with Dr Tulp, four centuries of studying not just the painting, but also the man, let us hope that the Miami Beach PD are somewhat quicker!
